A friend is just embarking on round 2 following a relapse. She had the usual Taxol & Carboplatin last time but doesn’t know what to expect with this new chemo combo. There seems confusion about whether she’ll lose her hair for example.
Are there any ladies with recent experience? Anything in particular with side effects etc? Any info would be great!

Hi. I had this combo for first relapse. You don’t lose your hair though it may thin. It’s a four week cycle so you get some good feel well time between treatments. You mainly have to protect your skin and mouth. Heavy moisturizer on feet and hands, no hot water, and gentle toothpaste and mouthwashes. I found it far easier than frontline.
I did not lose my hair it just thinned out a lot as my consultant had told me. My hairbrush was always full of hair each time I brushed it but I maintained a respectable look I had to have my fringe reshaped twice my hairdresser noticed how thin it got but none of my friends. A lot said you are back on chemo and you have not lost your hair. Much better than it all falling out like it did with the taxol. Good luck I found it easier than first round of chemo. I hope you do.
I've only had one treatment so far of this combo and I am using the cold cap to be on the safe side.I felt really nauseous for 5 days and craved carbs but on the 6/7 th day felt better.
I've just started Carboplatin and caeleyx ,I'm finding it easier than Carboplatin and taxol ,I've only had one cycle so far but my hair is good ,my main side effects have been weakness and fatigue ,I'm day eight now and thinking about going out for coffee and cake this afternoon , Cheryl x
I found it a bit more tolerable however my neutrophils have taken a hit every time and have gotten Neulasta 27 hrs after each chemo session. No mouth sores and very minimal hair loss (can’t even tell) I just finished 5 th session and as they ell you it is cumulative. It takes me 4 days to recover. I have learned be kind to yourself go to bed rest, sleep, read, in no time you will be back up and about. Every body reacts differently. I choose not to eat just drink broth and an electrolyte immune support drink mix and water for the first 4 days as the steroids wreak havoc with constipation. Don’t know if this is the healthiest regime but it works for me. Good luck hang tough and fight this disease hard.Debbie in San Diego
Hi there, I had this combo for my last treatment 6 years ago. I didn't lose my hair and the dose was adjusted (lowered a little) after 3rd treatment because it was lowering white cells more than expected. It made my skin very sensitive and dry and I also found spending too long under the shower caused little cuts on my back, also more sensitive to the sun. It was 4 weekly so time to recover in between and although I experienced fatigue I was still able to go out and about, to the shops, for walks and so on, just got tired more quickly than usual. However, it was effective as 6 years later I'm still in remission. Much as I really don't like having chemo I take the view that I'll take it on and go with it because I believe it will help. This combo was my 3rd line of chemo after diagnosis 14 years ago and has given me my longest stretch of remission so far.
Wishing you all the best with it, and don't be afraid to ask any questions of the team or raise any concerns, they can usually help one way or another.
