Hi Tabor,

My understanding is that the tubes used to collect blood samples contain an anticoagulant, which mixes with your blood and prevents it from clotting. When a sample clots, it's typically due to user error (for example, the phlebotomist didn't mix/invert the sample enough for the blood to meet the anticoagulant).

It definitely happens and it usually doesn't have anything to do with the blood itself. :)

I had this happen. They said to me it was because my blood came out slowly it had clotted before it was fully drawn. They anticipated this happening because it was very hard to get a vein and blood ( now have a port) and said it was very normal. I just had another sample taken which was fine x

My blood draws are done in my oncologists office and they have the results in minutes before any chemo etc .is done . I had one port . that wouldn't cooperate and, finally they replaced it , no problems since . I have seen other patients with similar issues where they couldn't draw enough blood . The chemo nurse takes the samples and she does invert them several times , I guess to mix with the anti coacoagulant. I wouldn't worry about it , it was probably the phlebotomists fault.

Actually phlebotomists are much better at getting a vein than nurses are

Hi Tabor,Yes, I have.

For me it was simply a case of taking so long to draw the blood into the tube (and possibly there not being enough blood).

There are crystals in some of the tubes which prevent clotting, if your blood isn’t mixed with these immediately the blood instantly clots and they can’t run the necessary tests.

I don’t know if it can ever be a problem with the body but this is the usual explanation.

I hope this helps.

They have trouble getting a vein to draw. I was a phlebotomist. They said ok go drink a lot of water. It works. Now I drink a lot for hours before blood work and its ok. Wishing you the best of luck.❤
