Staging from scan

Does anyone know how accurate staging from ct and mri is before surgery? I'm worried the stage will be even higher after the op.

The accurate staging can only be achieved with surgery. Even if it is higher, the aim of the surgeon is to remove all cancer that is visible to the eye and can be removed. Anything left is dealt with by the chemo.

I asked my CSN about this miniwild. She told me they don’t alter the stages after the original diagnosis.

Thank you, were you both staged before your surgeries or after? I think so far I've just been given a preliminary staging maybe? As I haven't had the debulking yet.

3B, after surgery - exactly as Newbie_2020 said. What matters most is the surgeon getting it all - a stage is just a number.

I was told from the off that they’d only confirm staging after the op and pathology. Scans are usually a good guide but are no replacement for the surgeon having a good look (that was from my surgeon).

Like most I imagine I asked them to estimate after my first scans and this changed a lot after pathology (downgraded).

Sounds flippant but worrying about it won’t alter it, the important focus is the op as you know your surgeon will do everything they can to get any visible nasties out xx

Thank you, when you say down graded do you mean they thought it was a higher stage initially but diagnosed a lower stage after surgery and pathology?

Welcome. Yes it was. I had a tumour in my womb as well which they initially thought was a spread but was two separate cancers. I also had some fluid on my lung which had to be tested so they were looking at stage 3/4 with that in mind x

I can’t add anything to the excellent post surgery staging advice from the other ladies but just wanted to say that the number is just that and your team will do their level best to treat you in the best possible way regardless of the grading.

I was diagnosed at 3C, but had a good response to the chemo (CA125 down to 22 after three sessions), and the debulking went well with all of the cancer being removed (got a tiny - mms - of scarring on my diagphragm which is not definitely cancer and which the surgeon said chemo should sort). The staging hasn't been changed.
