Hi. Having just finished six months of carbo caelyx aka doxil, I had a scan last week and am going to start Olaparib next Sunday. The scan showed that my main tumor which started out at about 3.4 x 2.2 cm is now just under 1 cm all around. Before I started chemo I had a PET scan which showed a couple of other tumors around 1 cm each plus scattered other spots but they don't seem to show up on the CT scan and the doctor doesn't seem worried about them. She seems to assume they're gone. I'm nervous about the side effects from the Olaparib but I'm starting at a reduced dose of 200. I'm BRCA negative but have a related mutation, PALB2, so we're hoping the PARP will work for a while. Please keep your fingers crossed for me. I know some people like Katmal have had amazing success with PARPs but others, even with BRCA positive, have not. So I hope to be lucky and meanwhile I hope all of you whose treatments have been postponed feel as well as possible and try not to worry in the meanwhile. xo

Hi delia,

I'm also starting on Olaparib - next Monday - and like you am BRCA negative. I'm nervous about the side effects obviously but lets hope for the best. The doctor has warned me about them but as with all drugs, side effects do not affect everyone. That's what I'm concentrating on - or at least trying to.

All the best - keep us posted!

Hi Delia--I stared at my Olaparib all evening before I got the nerve to swallow my first dose. I had few side effects and the ones I did have started to go away after a week. Fatigue lingered but not enough to cause me to stop my working or working out. Life was a bit easier with pills too--more freedom, no pre-or post meds, and I was glad to be on it. I hope your experience is the same and you have minimal side effects. You have the advantage of starting after many have used this treatment, allowing oncologists to lower doses when necessary knowing that doing so can also be successful. Good luck! ooxoxo Judy

Dear Delia,

Olaparib could be a life saver and you might do really well on it.

I wanted Olaparib, but had Niraparib instead, also on a lowered dose.

I thrived on it with good blood results and loads of energy.

It definitely slowed down my cancer, but did not stop it. I begged to have an increase in dosage, but was shot down, so that is why I switched to the DICE trial of weekly Taxol and TAK228.

All in all, I think you are lucky to be offered Olaparib.

Wishing you even more luck,

Hugs,

Laura

Hi Delia,

I started Olaparib on January 3rd this year after a first line treatment of Carboplatin and Paclitaxel.

The cancer in my abdomen was all clear but I still had two slightly enlarged lymph nodes. My consultant put me on the drug as my tumour was BRCA positive although I don’t carry the gene as such. I’m monitored monthly. So far, so good. ( Always have fingers crossed!)

I don’t get any very bad side effects, just a bit of nausea which comes and goes. I didn’t get problems with fatigue particularly. Also, I get a very watery mouth sometimes. However, all worth putting up with if they do the job!

All the best with yours, I hope you don’t have many side effects ( They do tend to settle after the first 6-8 weeks generally) and I hope they keep you fit and well.

Love Denise xxxxx

I'm doing really well except for occasional fatigue. My first CT scan is next Tuesday so I guess I'll know more after that. Thanks for asking!

Glad to hear that. What is your daily dose and do you have much nausea?

Good luck on your scans. Sending positive thoughts.
