On Friday last I finally had this procedure at my local hospital. All went well. The only issue was that I had to wait 7 hrs. in the waiting area before being called. Talk about "last man standing! - definitely me. However all the staff were brill. I soon came down to earth post op. though with low back pain, a cystitis type burning feeling when trying to urinate and blood in urine. I had to resort to taking 30/500 Co-codamols. Things improved yesterday when I then stopped taking the pain relief. Still blood in urine though. Other ladies experiences /advice welcomed. Gwen Xx
Bi-lateral ureteral stents: On Friday last I... - My Ovacome
Bi-lateral ureteral stents
I had these inserted during my surgery and they were uncomfortable.
It took 5 days to get less blood in the urine although that may have been the catheter too. I was then discharged. They were removed about 6 weeks later and the lower back pain went too although it had diminished by then. It felt like a uti (which I did have to start with but not after the antibiotics). I was very glad when they were gone but was becoming more tolerant as things healed up.
I do hope you soon feel much better and they do their job for you.
Sending good vibes

Hi Alex, 3 days on and blood seems to be diminishing. I have been told to drink plenty to avoid uti's. Also for me to avoid getting constipated which, for me, has always been a problem so plenty of Ducosate and Lactalose sachets. I have been told they will need changing in 6 months - I think I might be in for the long haul here! Hope you ok. Best wishes. Gwen Xx
Well Done Gwen!! What a wait!
No experience of the stents but I would think it will all settle (pain & blood).
As an ex-nurse I’d say - don’t get constipated (straining) & drink adequate amounts of water (flush through & keep kidneys happy).

HI Linda,
Yes beginning to settle I'm really conscious of possible impact of constipation (and straining which I'm good at!!!) so it's plenty of Ducosate and Lactalose sachets along with lots of water. It was quite a wait, abt. 6 weeks plus from referral and then 7 hrs. in the waiting room before being called. Best wishes. Gwen Xx
Glad I didn't get it done, though I was supposed to! It took so long to get the appointment it ended up being scheduled on the same day as my actual op... removing the need for it to be done.
HI BellmoreBelle,
I needed to have stents put in because I have a growth on the ureter and the surgeon needs a stent in to assist her in the operation. Also, first it was one ureter that required stenting then it was two as there is something "suspicious" there although it could just be scar tissue. It's a needs must situation - I certainly wouldn't have volunteered for it!!! I'm pleased you didn't need it. Gwen Xx
HI Gwen,
I had those stents inserted before my debulking surgery (purpose being to prevent accidentally damaging the ureter during the op), but truth to be told I almost murdered the urologist who committed it. Felt like an acute UTI, with blood in my urine and frequent trips to the loo. Sleep was not an option. Threatened with all sorts of unpleasantness the day after surgery, in order to get rid of the things asap.
That said, a friend told me he didn't feel his at all anymore after a few days of settle-in time, and he had stents fitted every half year or so, over a few years. So I hope you will continue to feel better over the next days, and soon forget the stents are there, so they can do their job without overly impacting your life. Hugs, Maus
Hi Maus 123, Thanks for your reply. Wow, I thought I had problems with them!! Yes, I had to resort to 30/500 strong co-codamol for 2/3 days but off them now. Initially had bleeding, a strong burning cistitis feeling when trying to urinate and pain in the lower back. Not pleasant. What I do have now is that often when I wee I can feel something sharpish presumably the end of the stent in my bladder? I worry it might be starting to come out which I don't need. Anyway will see how I go. Best wishes. Gwen Xx
