Obstruction / blocked bowel - no surgery. Any advice - PLEASE

Hello - please does anyone have any advice at all. My mum had surgery yesterday for an obstruction but they couldn’t operate and said the cancer had spread too far. And was all across the bowel, my mums CA125 has been going up and we have been back to a&e numerous times. The surgeon is now saying they are going to refer us to palliative care because they don’t think that oncology would do more chemo. We are still waiting for oncology to come back with anything - as always chasing, chasing. She finished chemo in September and has been on avastin since then. Please does anyone have any advice at all?? Surely there’s more chemo or drugs. We have been asking since Feb for another scan but but they said they weren’t concerned and now it seems the disease has spread very quickly. She hasn’t had Niraparib or anything

Hi there.. there is a nurse led helpline at Ovacome. I think you might also get some experienced advice from the lovely people there. Xx

I am so sorry you are faced with this situation.

If your mom is in the hospital or bedridden, it will be hard to ask for a second opinion, but that is what you need.

Do call the Ovacome support line and see if they can advise you.

What a shame this all is!

Hugs,

Laura

Thank you for your reply Laura. I don’t even know where to start with a 2nd opinion do you have anyone you would recommend? Would it be the secretary as the first point of call?

I am not certain about doctors in the north, but someone here may have a suggestion. I know ladies respect The Christie in Manchester.

Meanwhile, Ovacome's Support Manager, Anna, may be able to guide you - freephone helpline 0800 008 7054.

Hugs,

Laura

The Christie is in Manchester and this might help:

Prof G J from The Christie is one of the medical advisers (So is Prof C F, whom many have seen for second opinion on possible radical surgery for recurrence)

Hello,

I hope the oncology team is able to come and speak to your mum ASAP. Whether there are more chemo options are available may depend on how poorly she is. If she’s too weak, it may not be possible.

I do agree with Laura about a second opinion if that’s possible though.

I hope you can both get some answers very soon. Bowel obstructions are nasty - I’ve had two but have been lucky that they’ve cleared.

North west England - Wirral

If you are in the Wirral, I’d definitely recommend a second opinion at the Christie. Your mum’s GP can do a referral for her if her hospital team aren’t being very helpful. There’s a prof there (Prof J...you will find him on the Christie website) and people absolutely sing his praises. I haven’t been to The Christie so can’t speak from personal experience.

Good luck, Vicki x

Thanks so much, I have found him. I just hope the blocked bowel starts to clear itself :( :( I am waiting for the Christie to get back to me. I am just so worried about how fast my mum can become poorly again

Hi, I’m on the Wirral too under the care of Clatterbridge, have you tried speaking to Danielle the CNS there? She’s excellent at chasing. DM me if you’d like her number. Jan

Hi. Can't really give you any info on a second opinion as I'm not in that position as of yet but I've had a couple of blockages and I feel for your mum as it is extremely painful. I to have my treatment at clatterbridge and find if you get in touch with the CNS they will do there best to help you. Keep on at them your mum deserves as much help as possible.

Love Claire xx
