Hit a nerve!

Hi, quick question.... anyone else had the nurse hit a nerve during a blood test? Mine did this on Wednesday now I have weird intermittent shooting pains up and down my arm particularly affecting my wrist and a constant dull ache in the back of my upper arm and a weird feeling when I fully extend my arm, lift ANYTHING or say carry my handbag. Not sure whether to see gp or just let time heal it. xx Kathy xx

Never had anything like that happen. And we all have pretty much been pin cushions during our treatment.

Plus, I had a blood disease when I was younger which required about ten thousand punctures from every available location. Got lots of bruises, but nothing like you describe.

I would have it checked out.

Hugs,

Laura

Hi, I had a nerve hit in the back of my hand during a blood test. My hand swelled just a little when there needle went in and was a little bruised but it didn’t ache or affect the rest of my hand or arm. I would get it checked out. Xxx

Ouch Kathy. I'd get it looked at immediately. They should have done that right on the day of the blood draw I think.

This might be useful?

Hopefully it goes away soon but if my peripheral neuropathy pain is any indication, nerve damage could be relatively slow to heal.

Yes, I've had that one - I yelled and probably nearly reached the ceiling. It did settle down afterwards. Apparently, it happens.

It was a truly horrible experience - but mine didn't linger like that, so maybe you need to ask. My husband once had to have a few days recovery from a badly inserted cannula. I just guess it happens sometimes. We have all had good and bad 'hits'.

Hi Kathy - A nurse did this to me once and I leapt into the air, however it did not continue to hurt after she pulled the needle so I would go ahead and see your GP. Good Luck Lyn xx

That happened to me when I was in labor. They put the iv in the top of my hand and when it hit the nerve my whole body went hot and cold and it was really hard for me to maintain any kind of composure during labor. I did have some discomfort in my arm for a while. It was a horrible experience.

It does take a while, it was six months before the bruises had gone looked beaten up. That was on hospital ward.

I don’t think there’s much they can do. I rubbed mine and made it worse

I'd get it checked out Kathy. Nerves do take a long time to settle though. I pulled a nerve once. Went to the docs and he told me the pain and tingling would get worse before it got better as the nerve repaired and he was right!

There are no hot/reddened areas are there?

No Sandra, no hot/red areas. Seems to be worse when I straighten my arm or carry/ lift anything, so have to keep arm slightly bent. Im hoping time will heal it xx

Hi Kathy,

Just recently I had a blood draw and there was not a nurse available to access my port. She hit a nerve! It was very painful! That was the only time I every had that happen. It left my arm bruised but I did not have any problems after the fact. I would recommend getting it checked out. Better to be on the safe side. Any of us who have experienced this has much compassion. I hope your arm starts feeling much better very soon! Take Care Kathy! Peggy xx

I had this happen. I am fairly needle-phobic anyway and this experience made me a jibbering wreck.

I had tingling pain for a week or two after wards but nothing long term, apart from the extra dread of the cannula.

Hi Cathy--no experience with this but ouch! I think you have to get it checked out and make sure that nurse does not do your bloods again! I know nerves can be resilient but also very slow in the healing process. The fact that yours got better than worse again would lead me to see someone. Good luck--please let us know what they say. oxox

Yes had similar- think it was during a cannula insertion. Hurt for a week or so I think. No harm in asking advice thoug. I had a thrumbophlebitis once too from a cannula which needs to be checked with ultrasound - a painful vein.

Hi, I've had this happen twice while needle being inserted for infusion. The first one continued to give me pain for about six months - it got worse before it got better. The bruise stayed for a year or so, which was useful as it showed where they shouldn't try and stick a needle. The second time I reacted faster (as in, screamed), they took the needle out straight away and the pain lasted about a month and no bruise. It might be a good idea to get it looked at, especially if it swells or goes red.

HI- UST SAW YOU YEAR OLD POST AND HOPE YOU DIDN'T HAVE THE SAME RESULT I HAD WHEN AN IDIOT NURSE HIT A NERVE. I HAVE A NUMB HAND (LEFT HALF) AND ELECTRIC SHOOTING PAINS FROM THIRD FINGER AND PINKY. IT WILL NEVER GO AWAY. MOST PEOPLE FIND THAT THEIR DAMAGE HEALS OVER TIME. I NOW ONLY USE MY PORT FOR BLOOD OR ANYTHING ELSE. I HOPE YOURS HAS HEALED AND LEFT NO DAMAGE.
