Hi there
Has anyone in the UK ever had or know where Intraperitoneal chemo can be done?
It seems to be very common in the US but not UK. Also, quite painful, I hear.
Thank you all.

Hi Adina,
Yes like you, I would also like to know where intraperitoneal chemo can be done.
Gwen
Christies and a Hospital in Basingstoke I believe could do it.
Search for HIPEC.
Rich
Hi Rich,
I belive hipec is a chemo bath which can be had right at the time of the op to get rid of leftover cells as opposed to regular chemo.
Hi there ..
There are women on here who had intraperitoneal chemo as part of a randomised trial. I don't know all of the outcomes but at least one hasn't had a recurrence. I know it''s an uncomfortable procedure with some tipping of the body as the chemical has to be moved around in the abdomen.
Not everyone is suitable for this therapy. This link shows details of a Phase III trial which has eligibility criteria and also tells how patients are put into treatment groups so getting into the intraperitoneal group isn't guaranteed.
Prchick (username) has had this on the petroc trial and I'm sure she would be happy to give you info as she helped me when I enquired about it. I couldn't go on the trial as onc said it had ended. Good luck

IP chemo is used quite often in the private sector. Vx
Hi vipervictoria, when you say it's used in the private sector, where is that? Is that if you have private insurance or if you pay cash?
In my hospital you can go privately but the treatment is basically the same as the NHS. I know my aunt went to the marsden privately but again the options where the same as the NHS.
Love to know more....
I see my oncologist privately in guildford but IP is not offered here
Thank you! Xx
Hi Adina. I had IP chemo as part of a clinical trial that others have mentioned (Petroc) at the Western General in Edinburgh. I see that someone has mentioned that another phase of the trial is still open though randomised. I didn't find it painful at all. A small port is inserted under the skin ( in my case under general anaesthetic at the same time as radical hysterectomy) for the duration of the treatment cycles and the drugs are administered through this rather than intravenously. The only discomfort was wearing an under wired bra so I wore a pull on softee which was comfortable. The tipping and rolling to distribute the drugs around the peritoneum wasn't a problem as you lie on a table which does the tipping for you. Quite a novel experience. I had 3 cycles of this and the side effects were much less than with the same dosage of carboplatin and paclitaxel I had by IV for the first 3 cycles pre hysterectomy. This was all in 2012 and although, sadly, my OC has recurred, I had a good 18 months before I needed any more treatment. In the intervening period I was on Letrozole to lower oestrogen levels, cut out dairy almost entirely for the same reason, and sugar, and ate so much fresh fruit and vegetables that I felt like a human compost bin! Worked for me for longer than expected and in general I felt pretty good for a long time before symptoms returned. Hope you have even better luck.
Beth
Thank you Beth, will be praying that you continue to do amazingly well Xxx
I am in the states and had peritoneal chemo for carcinosarcoma, taxol and carboplatin. It really wasn't 't that bad.....by the time I got home and walked around, the bloating was usually gone. I did not find it to be painful. Uncomfortable, but not painful. Prayers for you as you make you decision. Sadly, 8 month remission, and recurrence, but never peritoneal chemo again. Only once.
Hi, my husband has been diagnosed with peritoneal cancer and is waiting for a place at The Christie Hospital in Manchester. There are only 2 hospitals that deals with this rare form of cancer, the Christie and one other in Hampshire. Speak to the Consultant. Good luck.
IP chemo is done here in australia as a matter of course. Mostly in the private sector. I had it done, 4 rounds of treatment. Unfortunately I reoccured after 8 months. I too have only had it once. It is not painfully but I had explosive diarrohea after the treatment.
I have a friend who was part of petrov trial for peritoneal cancer, very similar to ovarian. She had trial at clatterbridge, she has had no reoccurance. I think it's 2 years now since she finished. She is visiting relatives in America at moment so can't ask her.
I did do IP chemo here in Canada
I won't lie it's a bit uncomfortable but my dr said We pull all our ladies through it! She was right!
All the best
Mary
