Maintaining and improving bone health requires a balanced diet rich in essential nutrients. Here are key nutrients crucial for bone health:
Calcium: Vital for bone structure and strength. Dairy products, leafy greens, and fortified foods are good sources.
Vitamin D: Helps absorb calcium. Sunlight, fatty fish, egg yolks, and fortified foods are sources.
Magnesium: Supports bone mineralization. Found in nuts, seeds, whole grains, and leafy greens.
Vitamin K: Assists in bone mineralization and reduces fracture risk. Leafy greens, broccoli, and fermented foods contain vitamin K.
Phosphorus: Works with calcium to maintain bone structure. Found in dairy, meat, and whole grains.
Protein: Provides building blocks for bones. Lean meats, fish, beans, and dairy products are good sources.
Omega-3 fatty acids: May reduce bone loss. Fatty fish, flaxseeds, and walnuts are sources.
I think it should be clarified that it's Vitamin K2 which helps with the bones, and there isn't much in our modern western diet. We are not very efficient at converting K1 from our leafy greens into K2 and have relied on our animals to do that for us. Grain fed animals do not supply us with K2, so in the absence of grassfed animals and dairy next best, convenient, option is supplements, usually sourced from natto (fermented soy), and other fermented foods may also contain K2.
