Vitamins to help bone healing

A recent broken wrist has led me to discover the importance of Vitamin C in bone health. Unsurprising really, as it's important for collagen formation. Here is a nice little article outlining the role various nutrients have in maintaining bone health:

Sorry to hear about your wrist fracture. I hope you're healing well. Good nutrition really helps the body recover. I hope you had someone providing delicious, nutritious meals for you. Hard to cook with a broken wrist!

That would be nice. I dream on. Although hubby did make some pasta sauce the other day and we've had takeaway at our sons' houses a few times.

It's a start :) I hope the fracture wasn't on your dominant side.

I came across this article, which has a lot of references for the effect of vitamin C and other nutrients in bone health. Anyone interested can scroll down to the section on vitamin C. It's 3.2.2.

Thank goodness not my dominant side. Considering how I fell lucky I didn't break both wrists. I do not know how people can manage when that happens. Had a little chat with a young clerk in a nearby store. He said he had to wear a cast like mine for months, having landed off a skateboard going some terrific speed. Said he was perfectly fine now, and had hardly even needed physio afterwards.

Ah, youth. :)

It's good it's not your dominant side. I started to say 'that's a lucky br---' and thought better of it.

my former dr mentioned vitamin c infusion, if you can find anyone in your town that can do it

I don't think so.... :D

Doesn't our body just eliminate vitamin C it doesn't immediately use? We can't store it, which is why we have to have some every day.

I've just looked it up. Seems like it is beneficial for cancer patients, and Vitamin C levels do stay higher than usual for about 3 weeks after an infusion. INteresting bit of knowledge, although probably ott for a broken bone in otherwise healthy individual. :)

Sorry to hear about your injury. My dr. prescribed Zinc and a high dose of slow release vitamin C supplements to help repair bone tissue damage. Who knew?

Good luck!

I tried to take some zinc, it was some sort of tablet you dissolve in your mouth and I found it disgusting.... Should I try harder?

the zinc I take is in capsule form. I take it after breakfast and then I take the natural vitamin c chewable tablets. After lunch I take the calcium and vit D3 and after dinner I take the magnesium! It’s best to space them out so they don’t compete or interfere with absorption. I would love to have the infusion though. I’m going to ask around.

Good luck!

Thing about zinc supplements, what about copper? Sometimes it's best just to get these trace nutrients from food because then (I hope) there's a good chance you're also getting the other nutrients. I do avoid taking calcium and magnesium at the same time. I think calcium is a bit of a bully and interferes with the absorption of other elements, including iron. In a way it makes sense because calcium is so extremely important.

When I had Graves Disease back in 2012 I took 1000mcg slow release vitamin C. I’m not sure why exactly though but a friend told me that when her son broke his leg his consultant told her to give him vitamin C daily.

Then later when I had a tooth taken out, the after care leaflet from the dentist recommended taking vitamin C which I was doing anyway at that time and I’ve always found I have healed very well.

I stopped taking vitamin C tablets a few years ago because I felt it caused my iron levels to be high and indeed I’d say they have settled down since I stopped.

I would still take extra vitamin C should I have the need and would recommend others try it for its healing properties. I’ve always eaten and still eat lot of vitamin C rich foods though.

I don’t take zinc separately but I eat a lot of foods that are rich in zinc and I take a seaweed based calcium top up and I’m pretty sure that zinc is one of the trace elements in that.

Good point about vitamin C increasing iron absorption. That might be an added advantage for some, a problem for others. Without testing, we'd be none the wiser.

Definitely an advantage for me. :)
