High dose boron?

Do any of you have experience taking high doses of boron? A friend of mine said she reversed her osteopenia with 90 mg boron per day, then reduced the dose to 60 mg per day after a few months. Thanks.

THE USE OF VITAMINS AND MINERALS IN SKELETAL HEALTH: AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF CLINICAL ENDOCRINOLOGISTS AND THE AMERICAN COLLEGE OF ENDOCRINOLOGY POSITION STATEMENT

"Boron is a trace element found naturally in plants, and a diet consuming fruits, leafy vegetables, nuts, and legumes is high in

boron. Boron does not seem to have a clear biochemical function in humans, but it may have a role in reproductive and bone

health in animals. Boron may stabilize and extend the half-life of vitamin D and estrogen and increase the renal retention of

calcium and magnesium, but there are insufficient data to recommend supplementation for skeletal health." (journals.aace.com/doi/10.41...

In the article, AACE lists the tolerable Upper Limit (UL) for boron as 20 mg/day. Your friend's 90 (or even 60) mg/day, seems really high.

Their summary:

"Debate surrounds the benefits of individual high-dose micronutrient supplementation among well-nourished individuals, and this

is true also for skeletal health. Given the study limitations limiting our current knowledge, provision of excess nutrients beyond their threshold of benefit may not produce a greater response. Three critical nutrients for bone health are calcium, vitamin D, and protein, and diets that are inadequate in one may well be inadequate in other nutrients important to skeletal health. Otherwise, optimal nutritional status for bone health is best obtained by consuming a healthful diet and will likely not be met by single nutrient supplementation."

High-dose boron supplement is Borotab, 30 mg tablets, by a company called Hakala, bought from NaturalHealthyConcepts.com. My friend used 90 mg Borotab a day for months, then cut down to 60 mg a day. I've been trying 30-60 mg a day along with all the other bone-building supplements (vit D3, vit K2, magnesium glycinate, dairy products, Calciblend in morning coffee, etc.) with no side effects so far. Too early for next bone scan so not sure if this regimen is working yet.

And the party line in corporate-influenced nutrition info is that 3 mg of boron per day is sufficient and over 20 is excessive. Yet there is strong evidence that countries (eg Turkey) with high boron content in drinking water present a significantly lower incidence of arthritis, for example. There is strong evidence that boron is essential to bone repair, and that it contributes to hormone regulation. Yet the USDA and others say "we don't really know what it does and don't take too much of it – toxic!" Statistics presented make it less toxic than salt per volume, and reveal no proof of toxicity. There are substantial scientific studies supporting very impressive positive effects of boron in therapeutic doses – similar to what your friend reports. I'd listen to her, and support that with digging into the research. Not as readily available as it should be – but it's there if you want to find it.

I haven't taken boron supplements, but do eat foods high in boron and one of the calcium supplements I take includes boron. I believe weight bearing exercise is really important also. It is probably not wise to rely on megadoses of any unproven supplement. Our bodies are adapted to what's available in food so it would seem wiser just to take a little bit more than might be in a healthy, varied diet.

Thanks so very much for this video!! I use Bone Up daily for my osteoporosis, and it contains boron. There is a lot of boron in foods, as well. Good to know it is helpful for the brain, too!!

Acetyl L-Carnitine (CAP) also helps as does vitamin K2-7

I believe boron also helps with fluoride removal from bones, perhaps that is part of what makes it help bones.

I read a book by Dr. Jeff T. Bowles that says he personally took high doses ( 60mg or more per day ) to cure his frozen shoulder. He also mentions reading studies of it curing arthritis at that dose.
