I have just been diagnosed with osteoporosis. I had osteopedia and tried fosamax, but it upsets my stomach.so I tried healthy eating, vitamin, stop smoking, but that wasn't enough to prevent osteoporosis. My new Dr put me on prolia (4 days ago). Looking for input on how to handle all this. It's all a bit scary

Sometimes you have to try several different medications before you find the right one. People expect to do this with their blodd pressure meds. I know people (my husband) whose doctors have tried several before finding the one that managed the BP effectively and didn't have annoying side effects.

I took Fosamax for a few years, but am in my 18th month on Forteo and have a 12% increase in bone density WHERE I needed it. Will take it for 6 more months, then need to determine what medical program to change too. Can only have Forteo for 24 months, as that length of time Eli Lily tested it when the FDA approved its use. Sadden by that; Forteo works in an entirely different way than anything on the market. Osteoporosis is a chronic matter which requires maintenance. My sister has the two Prolia injections a year in her physician's office and is doing well. Since my Forteo treatment will end soon, Prolia or infusion are among the maintenance choices my rheumatologist has mentioned.

I agree with yogalibrarian regarding the need for trying several medication approaches until the right fit is found. I am a bit uneasy about Prolia as a side effect can be jaw bone loss, which then may affect the condition of teeth. But the infusion doesn't thrill me either. I've contacted my doctor's office to be certain he has scheduled sufficient time to explain what maintenance he recommends, along with the benefits versus possible side effects.
