gastritis … flare ups?

Hi all,

I’ve been suffering with gastritis for about a year. This has been well managed for the last few months with omeprazole in the morning and famotadine on the evening. However, I am recently finding I am having flare ups even when taking these… particularly when I’m going through something stressful. I get the sickiness back and a pain in the upper stomach! Does anyone else suffer flare ups even when taking their medication ? Does this seen normal?

Yes. All the time. It is very depressing and I don't really know what to suggest. I'm on the maximum medications, have had a recent endoscopy, (which showed nothing of concern), follow a strict diet, and my doctor has now said, 'You will just have to put up with it!'.

I kind of feel that’s what I’ve been told too. Just have gaviscon as well if it flares up. So frustrating- what are your symptoms?

I was diagnosed with a Hiatus Hernia over twenty years ago, and after my recent endoscopy was also diagnosed with Gastritis. I'm on 80 mg of Pantoprazole and 40 mg of Famotidine daily, and Gaviscon Advance after meals and before bed. I watch my diet very carefully, eat small amounts, and don't eat any food after 6pm. I've also raised the head of my bed up onto bricks. I don't get much reflux now (think the amount of medication I take sorts that). But I get terrible stomach pains after meals, that radiate up into my chest and through to my back, and make me feel sick. It can also hurt when I walk and when I bend down sometimes. As a result of not being able to eat enough, I have lost over three and a half stones and I am classed as underweight for my height now. But I'm hungry! Very rarely, I will have a better day, and I'm now trying to monitor why? It can get very depressing. I've found that the only thing that helps with the pain, is having a hot water bottle on my stomach. Maybe that's something you could try? Good luck.

I have the same thing ongoing. Medics dont seem to have a solutions so just left to get on with it myself. Its horrid and demoralising.

I seem to still be prone to bouts of gastritis after H Pylori a couple of years ago. I am not on medication now but do use Gaviscon Advance when I need it. I have to avoid eating late at night. Recently went to a bbq and suffered for days from eating and drinking too much. Also find stress can cause it. Now I just go back to a bland diet and plenty of Greek yogurt when I have symptoms. I realise this is something I will have to cope with. I think my digestion has got weaker as I am getting older.

Stress is a big instigator of these conditions - I have this too. It makes sense to try and direct your attention to controlling your response to stressors. Stressors exist, and always will, but I think you can recondition your responses to them. I went to therapy to understand why my body was overactivated and I also found some mindfulness techniques and breathing helped calm things.

I have had similar symptoms after H Pylori eradication in 2022. Still get flare ups despite taking pantoprazole 40mg daily once a day. It's like others says when flare up starts best to switch to completely bland diet for a few days, increasing gaviscon advance. I have recently started taking Silicolgel. Not sure yet if it is helping.

I heard that it's not good to be on omeprazole long term and found they didn't help much, so tried high strength manuka honey for a while, which did help. Best thing I've found so far is bio health slippery elm though (check for contradictions with other meds). And there are lifestyle changes such as, I don't eat tomatoes anymore. I'm still not right, but definitely improved in that I'm now able to eat.

Hi Kimberly I have suffered from reflux for about 20 years. I recently have had terrible vomiting episodes I have gone back to 2 lansoprasole daily and I gaviscon after each small meal. I to have the pain in the back. I would love to find a cure for the nausea. I have bought emetrol on line which sometimes helps the nausea. I do hope you find something to help yours.xx
