I’m due for an endoscopy on Tuesday. The nurse I saw at the hospital prior to this said to stop taking the Omeprazole (I forget how long before procedure I was supposed to stop).
I got an appointment almost straight away and I’ve not been taking the Omeprazole for 4 days now and I’ve realised how much it was helping to stop the heartburn through the day as well as acid reflux at night.
I’m getting a lot of bad heartburn since I stopped taking it, which is relieved a bit but not wholly from Gaviscon. I’m getting this even when I don’t eat! Any ideas what I can do to ease this for the next couple of days?
I already do the following to try to prevent the symptoms of burping, acid reflux and regurgitation:
Raise myself up with pillows in bed, sleep on my left side, stop eating at least 3 hours before bed, I don’t drink alcohol and only occasionally eat spicy foods. I think some of my medications may be contributing 🤷🏻♀️.
Thank you in advance 🤗

Never eat spicy food, no acidic food. Had a kiwi fruit yesterday promptly bought it up. Bananas are ok . Wait until your tea/ coffee has cooled a bit. Sorry I cannot be if more help, good luck
This happened to me when I had to stop taking my PPI before my endoscopy it's the acid rebound effect and normally settles after 2 weeks. My reflux has improved a lot after changing my eating habits (little and often) removing triggers as I was eating a lot of fruit and I also started taking some herbal supplements such as marshmallow root, slippery elm 3 times a day and DGL tablets 20 minutes prior to eating and I only get very minor symptoms now. I also find gaviscon helped during the rebound period. My endoscopy came back clear so think mine was lifestyle and stress related. Keep going through the rebound and it will improve!!
I was told to stop 7 days before but did every other day in the week leading up to that also to lessen the rebound effect. Dgl is deglistenerized licorice root. It's a chewable tablet that reduces the effects of reflux
There’s only 6 days between my consultation appointment last week and my endoscopy which is tomorrow, so not a lot of weaning off time!
I haven’t heard of the liquorice root, although might not be suitable for me. I think I’ve heard that liquorice can affect blood pressure and mine is high so maybe not. Might try the other’s though, thanks 😊
You're right licorice isn't great for high blood pressure but the dgl version has had whatever it is that impacts blood pressure removed. I get all my supplements from iherb.com
They have indeed!! Still being careful with my food but pretty symptom free now! I think stress is a big factor for me so also adding in meditation, yoga and breath work. There's so much you can do but it's just finding something that works for you and working out the root cause which for me was not eating enough, eating too much fruit and stress!
Before, trying that, you should definitely consult with your g.i.There are some conditions, that you may need ppis.Your g.i will know more about any condition you may have, that we do.
Had to stop PPI two weeks before endoscopy. Used Gaviscon Advance, particularly at night before bed. Bland diet, manuka honey and Greek style yoghurt/kefir drink. Had H Pylori. Clear after about two weeks. Fine now, no medication and still use a raised pillow just in case. Hope you get some answers.
I really do not know what to tell you, about relieving your heartburn.Except you should not take DGL tablets without consulting your G.I.They may have to wait as well, until after your endoscopy. As least when it over, maybe you can take something.
I stopped taken omeprazole 2 weeks before my Endoscopy as it can interfere with the results of the Endoscopy i was to take Gaviscone to relive symptoms hope this helps Barb
