Barium Swallow and hernia diagnosis.

Having been referred for a Barium swallow, I decided to go for private appointment. which I had today.

The radiologist said that I have a hernia, (small) he described it but is more than likely to be the cause of the throat clearing issues, i suspect from acid reflux.

So, now next to find out what the treatment will be, having been on esomeprazole 20/40mg. with to be honest not a lot of success, however, maybe a higher dose is needed or needs to be long term.

Anyone with similar issue, would be grateful for your experience with this, medications etc. also is surgery sometimes an option?

thanks

Hi I was prescribed esomeprazole 20mgva day after my gastroscopy which confirmed a hiatus Hernia. I found it definitely helped after about 2 weeks of taking it. I took it for 9 weeks and then started to reduce to every other day for 4 weeks following a blood test showing kidney issues. I stopped completely a week ago and have been managing using diet, kefir, slippery elm, raised bed and sleeping on left side. Hope this helps.

Hi, I’m on Esomeprazole 40mg twice a day for severe reflux. They are absolutely useless, as well as all the other PPis. Been recommended laparoscopic nissen fundoplication surgery.

Have you tried Gaviscon, which is often helpful. I have a large hiatus hernia, which at the moment seems to be under control with 1 Pantoprazole a day, and Gaviscon as necessary. No'one has ever mentioned surgery to me.

Thank you so much for your reply

Were you ever then on esomeprazole ? If so why did you change ? I am not sure it is working for me. Yes have Gaviscon Advance with mixed success. When you say a large hiatus hernia what do you mean , mine was described as incarcerated! Anything you read up on that is quite scary and yet there seems to be no urgency about referrals etc I am seeing a Consultant on Thursday so hopefully more answers then .

I started on Lansoprazole, really as a stomach lining protection for an anti inflamatory I was taking for arthritis. I became very anaemic, so they stopped the anti inflamatories, but at the same time I was told I had a large hiatus hernia. No one ever explained how big it was. I think if yours was incarcerated it needs action. I have had a hernia elsewhere and that became incarcerated. I changed from Lansoprazole as it gave me stomach problems, and started on Pantoprazole which suits me better. I have never tried the PPI you have had. Mine seems under control at the moment

I hope the consultant gives you more information at your appt, and it gets sorted out quickly. Best Wishes.
