I’m wondering if anybody else has choking and coughing with phlegm that leaves you breathless and heaving after having a meal.
I’ve been to the doctor lots of times, and I’ve been told it’s symptoms of my Hiatus Hernia.
The second last time I went to doctors he prescribed doubling up on Lansoprazole, 1 on a morning and 1 on a night, it didn’t help a lot still very bad coughing, last time I went (last week) a new doctor said it was the hiatus hernia and she subscribed Famotidine 1 on a night with my Lansoprazole, I also take peptac liquid 4 time s a day.
I’m so fed up with choking, does this sound right to you, does anybody else have this.
Thank you in advance for any replies.

absolutely …. My hiatus hernia was a sliding one the acid was not being held in my tummy It was ruining My oesophagus giving me Barrett’s syndrome and burning my voice box. The acid also spilled into my lungs and gave me a major asthma attack taking me to hospital more than once. So you can understand my absolute delight that the repaired hole in my diaphragm resolved so many distressing symptoms of GERD x
Hello, Your symptoms are identical to mine. I have a sliding HH, burning acid upto my throat which is always red and irritated. Night time is worse. Although I sleep almost sitting up, in the morning my throat is red raw, despite taking Omeprazole and Gaviscon advance at night. I have been considering the operation, but am a bit scared as it has mixed reviews. I would love to hear your experience. Thank-you.
Let’s hope we get it sorted, it’s starting to get me down, I have to think ‘where am I going’ ‘can I go out for a meal with friends’ so embarrassing if I have what I call an episode.
Read Dropping Acid by Dr Jamie Kaufman who describes those symptoms and many others also she has a blog which has a lot of info and also Facebook might all ring bells with you.
Hi yes! I have a 2cm hiatus hernia for the last few yrs and I suddenly (a couple of months ago) found that when I eat it feels like the food is stuck in my throat and I get a horrible tightening feeling like I am being strangled and was sick bringing up thick saliva. My Dr sent me for a Endoscopy and they said I have Esophagitus. Dr put me on Lansoprazole which on its own was not helping. I have started to have Calcium Lactate powder in water in the morning as a lack of calcium can cause the lump in the throat feeling. I also take wheatgrass powder in water which is high in vitamin A and can help repair the Esophagus (its good for the skin inside and out) I also take Licorice tablets (not sweets) I watch what I eat and no fried food, spicy food, tomatoes and no alcohol. I am getting better and yes, I still get the lump in the throat feeling but its not as bad and I find I can now eat more. Stick to soft food and eat slowly with sips of water. Lifting the head of the bed helps (not the mattress) If you haven't had an endoscopy I would ask your Dr to make an appointment for you. I am hoping I can stop taking the Lansoprazole soon as they are not good for you long term. Once my esophagus has healed I will start taking Apple cider vinegar with the Mother (Mother is the bacteria that is added) in water as that is good for acid relux. Hope that helps. Good luck. P.S try looking at Dr Berg videos on youtube as he has several videos on the subject with some good advice.
I have since found out that Acid reflux can be caused by low stomach acid so I did a test and found out my stomach acid is low so now I am taking HCL with Pepsin which increases the acid which I know sounds odd but a reduced amount of stomach acid can lead to an increase in intra-abdominal pressure , which can cause the lower oesophageal sphincter to open allowing small amounts of stomach acid to touch the oesophagus causing the familiar burning sensation experienced in reflux patients. Low stomach acid cannot digest your food properly either. I have heard some bad things about the Op although it works for some people but its not something I would want. I have only been on the HCL for a couple of days so too early to say if it works or not. I still take Licorice tablets and Calcium Lactate. I will never take Lansoprazole again as it made me ill and its not good for you.
The mucus feeling is very common and I have it as well. I found that tums works the best as does chewing gum (not mint) as it causes secretions which thins the acid. Meds such as Famotidine seems to make it worse. DGL (licorice tablets) did not help either.
