So discussion with GP today before my GI Appointment tomorrow and she suggests that a high dose of esomeprazole 40mg twice a day for a couple of months might be appropriate.
Has anyone had this dosage for a hiatus hernia and if so how effective might it likely to be ?
It's not going to cure the hernia is it ?
any replies greatly appreciated as always.

I was put on 30mg Lanzerpole for eight weeks ,twice a day ,I took have a hernia and have been having silent reflux, it hasn't really solved anything and then the doctor told me to stop them so she can test for hypolri, so I am in limbo just using gaviscon, throat discomfort after eating normally after afternoon meal.
No it will not heal a hernia. You may want to try an alkaline diet instead.Dr.Louise Kaufman's book Acid Reflux Diet is very helpful. She's a renowned expert on acid reflux. Be aware that PPIs ( like Omeprazole) affect bone density.
I’ve been on Esomeprazole 40 mg twice a day for almost 4 years - prior to that it was once a day with Ranitidine twice a day, but when Ranitidine was withdrawn I got terrible problems just on one dose of Esomeprazole. I have no problems taking it. I had a bone density scan 2 years ago and that was fine. I have hiatal hernia and silent reflux, and have been on PPIs for more than 15 years now. When I had to stop for 2 weeks prior to a gastroscopy, I developed a small ulcer and erosions in the duodenum, despite lots of Gaviscon in those 2 weeks. So I am much better off with the high dose of PPI. Wishing you the best of luck.
Thank you for your reply. I am really interested that you are on this higher dose as I feel I am struggling with 20- 40 mg esomeprazole . By the end of the day I seem to be needing So Much Gaviscon. Once or twice I have actually taken another 20mg Esomeprazole and it has settled things down . I am also researching and reading that a high dosage of PPI is more needed for hiatus hernia. ?
I’m not sure whether all cases of hiatus hernia need a higher dose - it’s what works for me. All medicines carry some potential harm, and my GPs initially told me 40 mg Esomeprazole a day was the maximum I could take - until I had a heart attack scare leading to an A&E admission when further investigations put the symptoms down to a bout of refractory acid reflux ( this being a few weeks after I could no longer supplement with Ranitidine). Now they’re happy to keep me on the 40 mg twice a day. I do also avoid food triggers (I kept a food diary for some months a couple of years earlier rating the strength of my voice), these are different for each individual, mine include common culprits like citrus fruit or juice, raw tomatoes, carbonated drinks. My best advice is to keep talking to your doctors about how you feel and what seems to be working for you. Kind regards.
