Haitus hernia

hi everyone,

I’ve posted in this group a few times, with regards to the same issue. I am a 28 years old female, and have recently been diagnosed with a 3cm sliding haitus hernia, I’m really having a miserable time with the relentless symptoms - which change from acid reflux, to belching and post nasal drip.

More recently I’ve been experiencing a constant feeling of mucus and needing to clear my throat - I’m waiting for a referral to ENT and have been taking PPI’s off and on over the last few months.

It’s really just so terrible and I’m feeling lost, fed up and scared of the possibility of having to deal with this forever. Has anyone had successful treatment or surgery? At this point I’m willing to try anything to be rid of this,

thanks I’m advance

So sorry to hear you are suffering with this , I have been on ppi's on and off for a while too ,it started with the constant throat clearing, ear discomfort and what was like post natal drip but without a cough ,I'm still getting reflux issues if I eat the wrong things , I took have a hernia which in the past occasionally gave me trouble , it seems on going even on ppi's,I don't think the Lanzerpole is doing much , recently had an endoscopy which said mild gastitis,I am sure this all flared up after having covid in December,I am doing the IQoro ,the throat clearing and ear problems have cleared up ,not sure if the IQoro has helped with that but I feel it is doing something.

thanks for responding, it’s so rough isn’t it. I’m finding it really difficult to work - as a lot of my job involves making big presentations which can be a challenge when I need to clear my throat all the time. I’m trying to get the device on prescription, but am not having much luck - how kind have you been using it for ?

Yes I feel for you if you have to do a lot of presenting! I am four and half months in,they do say about six months for a hernia , I feel like it has done something,it has almost stopped my snoring, I am hopeful that it will help relieve the symptoms totally !

Try the Zemaflux reflux trainer as a non-drug alternative.

There are 3 surgeries. The one where they wrap the stomach around the esophagus, the one where they put a magnetic band around the esophagus and the one they repair the hole for the hernia. Seeing as you are so young, I would recommend fixing the hole for the hernia. All acid symptoms would disappear and you could have a normal life. Try not to go down the road of taking ppi’s because they are a bugger to get off of and really do more harm than good. Eating a very bland diet will help you a lot when your symptoms are acting up. Take slippery elm after eating to coat the stomach as it heals the stomach lining which should help you not get gastritis, which is inflammation of the stomach lining, and right after taking the slippery elm take a Gaviscon, 2 if needed, but then don’t drink anything because that will break the foam barrier as acid will get through. There is an excercise you can do to strengthen the esophagus but only do so when the hernia is not up in the esophagus. Lie down on the floor and lift your neck up and hold for 30 seconds. Repeat as many times as you wish. Do whenever you remember to do them as this does strengthen and tighten the esophagus.
