I am 46 and have had OCD always around harming others since I was 12. I am terrified that I will harm my children and have had horrific thoughts about this.Sometimes I actually feel as if I want to do this which is extremely distressing as I love my children very much. I would be very grateful if anyone else has had similar experiences, can the OCD affect your feelings?

This is a common form of OCD and although my experience of this form is limited, many people have in the past posted on this forum with similar problems, particularly involving their children.

These impulses can feel very powerful but it has often been stressed that because people with OCD will do whatever they can to avoid doing harm, children are actually very safe with them!

One of the characteristics of OCD is that it attacks us using what is most valuable and precious to us, and what matters most to us. So it focuses on what is perhaps the most precious thing in your life, your family and children. But they are safe with you.

HI

This is a classic OCD symptom, one that is being used as an illustration to explain how OCD works, in psychology courses. The mother with a new born baby feeling desperate because she feels she wants to throw the baby out of the window.

It is the fear that we may cause harm to those we love that causes this. The fear prompts anxiety of course and it latches on to something that we are afraid of doing, to justify the feeling. (the fear).

The logic is simple enough but its hell to contend with.

The best advise is to relax, accept whatever thoughts come to mind on the subject and trust the statistics that show that harm to loved ones resulting from this fear is very very unlikely.

Hope this of some good to you. be strong.

cheers

Max
