Advice for OCD and Domestic Abuse

Hi everyone. I suffer really severely from OCD and have been doing therapy etc. I’m not making progress whatsoever but feel that this is because I’m living with my abusive mother. I would ideally want inpatient treatment as hopefully I can start making progress without the backlash from my mum but cannot receive this through the NHS as dubbed not severe enough and privately costs too much as my mum has control of my money. I can’t move out as I feel like I couldn’t manage. If anyone has any ideas or advice it would be greatly appreciated!

HI

difficult situation. Firstly if you dont want your mother to have control of your money, then it is in your lap, to do something about it.

If you are not severe enough to have inpatient treatment in a hospital there are choices - see aprivate psychiatrist to doublecheck your diagnosis - but be aware that it will cost around 350.00 x hour.

As regards your mother, you may want to challenge her to let her run your life as your see fit. You may want to see your GP or your psychologist if you already have one and take it from there. They will have opinions and advice about the situations.

What therapy have you been undergoing ? CBT doesnt work well for some people (including me) and ACT (read up about it on the web) is a close alternative which has worked very well for me, and I had severe OCD and major depression.

The first choice of treatment from the HS is CBT and medication. Ask for CBT to be changed to ACT and challenge the validity of the medications. Some work for some people, some other work better for other people.

Ensure you have a good nights sleep. And come back here if you need help - by all means.

Best wishes.

be well

Max.

That is a really vile situation to be in. It might help if you confide in your therapy team and psychiatrist that your mother is abusive, and this is not only impeding your progress but making it impossible to access in-patient treatment privately.

Abuse is abuse however old you are, but you don't give your age. It may be possible for the council to house you somewhere where your mother can't interfere. She has no right to treat you like this, and if you are an adult she has no right to control your money.

Domestic abuse often leads the victim to feel they couldn't manage on their own. Often an abuser actually tells them they couldn't. It's part of the abuse to trap the victim mentally and emotionally to maintain control. Even if your mother doesn't actually tell you that you couldn't cope on your own, the effect is the same.

It can feel as though you are better off where you are than breaking out into the unknown.

Please get out of this situation! I'm sure that if you do, you will find strengths you didn't know you had. Many people with OCD manage on their own. Also ask for a second opinion from your team. They must understand that you are not making progress and that it is down to your mother.

It could relieve your situation if you learn to stand up to your mother. I know it isn't easy to deal with a bully, but they usually back down when challenged. It's allowing them to walk all over you that encourages them and reinforces the bullying. I'm not blaming the victim here. But combating bullying involves standing up to them and making them know they can't get away with it.

Feel my therapy isn't working either. Changing my meds and increasing contact with my doctor.
