Advice welcome - musical obsessions, self doubt and anxiety...

Hi guys,

I'm new here and have taken some comfort in knowing I am not alone with my ocd symptoms - what a great community! I do however feel so debilitated and anxious because of it.

My ocd symptoms started about 6 months ago where I'd just loop sections of songs in my head, it started off as any random song I'd wake up with but now it is prompted by things I hear, see or think. I can't pull myself away from it and it is causing me to be seriously on edge. I also feel so distracted from work and feel like I can't remember what people tell me or ask me to do - almost like I'm so distracted by this and it has taken over me.

I am seeing a therapist and taking SSRI's for about a month now but haven't noticed any reduction in symptoms. I often wake up feeling horribly on edge and my ears are constantly ringing.

Any advice on how to cope and calm down with this would be greatly appreciated. I know it will take time to overcome but I just can't see light at the end of the tunnel. I'm hoping that with therapy, medication and help from this community I can overcome this and actively help others to as well.

Thanks in advance!

Sympathise with you there.Ocd takes a bit longer to ease, sometimes 12weeks! What address are you on? Some work on ocd better than others.Hope you succeed, won't cure it but will shut it away in the cupboards. X

Thanks for your response. I'm on citalopram, I was taking sertraline but it made me really anxious at the start so think my gp changed it because of that.

Good for you! That's the attitude.

It does take a few weeks for SSRIs to kick in, so perhaps you will start to feel an improvement.

It could help you to do relaxation exercises. They're not always easy to get to grips with, so don't be discouraged if you find them difficult. There are CDs that can help as well, and you could ask your therapist as they can be had on the NHS. Or download one from the internet.

But a quarter of an hour of quiet is all that's needed. If songs or bits of music come into your head, just let them.

Good luck with it and let us know how you get on!

I've been doing Yoga as that takes my mind off it. Meditation tends to make me agitated as I'm trying to shut these songs out, I haven't got the hang of allowing them to come and go...
