Well my eyesight has certainly deteriorated since i started meds. Have now had to drastically alter my prescription.

No inflammation or lesions but eyesight def worse.

steroids and hydrocychloroquine can both affect eyes. as now back on oral and injectable steroids fourth time in 3.5 years I have my eyes checked on my own decision yearly .

Yes, RA (and other autoimmune inflammatory arthritis) can make you more liable to get eye inflammation like scleritis, episcleritis or iritis which can damage your eyes if not treated early. Some drugs, especially hydroxychloroquine, can also damage your eyes.

That means that it is extremely important to not just put up with pain, or redness or changes in vision if you have RA, but always get it checked out very early so it can be treated. That way you have the best chances of avoiding long term damage. Eye pain is something that should be treated as an emergency.

Hello Willidiane

Your eye problems sound really unpleasant. As the others have said, RA can affect the eyes. I have eye scarring due to very dry eyes and my vision is not as it might be and I'm waiting for minor surgery to cauterise the tear ducts to see if it helps. Hopefully you have a good eye consultant helping you to manage your symptoms.

Thinking of you.

Hi Williediane

Yes, as others have confirmed RA can affect the eyes. We have an article on our website if you would like further details: nras.org.uk/about_rheumatoi...

Kind regards

Yes, I get dry eyes a lot and you should get dr. to check you out as you can get problems with eyes. I have a prescription for Optive eye drops that work great for me when my eyes are dry, scratchy and red.

Do get your dr. to give you a proper eye exam.
