I have been getting pain in the balls of my feet. It seems to vary from one foot to the other on different days so could it RA related?

Hi Cheryl, I too get pains in both the balls of my feet and it is worse first thing in the morning when it hurts just to put my feet to the floor and walk. Once up and going, it gets better. I think it is a symptom of RA and deffo worth mentioning to your doc/nurse. Hope you feel better soon. Mags x

Thanks Mags. It just seemed an odd place but as I've been wearing various pairs of shoes I thought it had to be RA ( ie couldn't have been because of new pair shoes). Becoming really rather uncomfortable although I have to say it tends to come on as the day progresses rather than an early morning thing! Guess we're all different!! Thanks anyway Cheryl

Hi Cheryl,

ask for a referral to Podiatry - they can make special insoles for your shoes which relieve the pressure on these joints. I have had considerable problems with foot pain and have erosion of the bones/joints in the balls of my feet and as the fat pad has slipped forward it feels like walking on pebbles:-( I've had great help from podiatry both with specially made insoles, treatment for calluses building up on the joints and advice on foot wear. The correct padding and insoles make all the difference to the pain and therefore your mobility:-)

ps your gp can refer you if you aren't going to have a rheumy appt in the near future:-)

Pain in the balls & soles of your feet is very common problem with RA. It feels as if you are walking on pebbles & if you really do its agony. Ie. Blind crossings at traffic lights you know the raised bumps bane of my life!

Plantar fascitis is also a reason for this, check with doc.

My feet was where my RA started. Are you diagnosed very long Cheryl?

I also get pain in the feet and like Gina K the diagnosis of RA started with my feet. I have plantar fasciitis. Suggest you get that checked out with chiropodist, chiropractor or podiatrist. There are special inserts you can get to help the discomfort. Last resort is an injection into the feet.

hi, me too! I have had this probelm. Not so bad recently, so maybe the MTX has helped a bit?! I have insoles too, they are wonderful when you're feet hurt a lot. orthotists / podiatrists will know what insoles could help you, looking at the wear and tear on your shoes is useful for them to know your pattern of walking too, as well as you being specific in describing your symptoms. Get referred, its non invasive and definitely worth a go! good luck x

Hi all thank you so much for all your advice. Will see my gp soon about referral. I was diagnosed with RA in late 2007 and earlier in the year I had terribly pain with my toes but not had it in balls of feet before.Since end 2008 I've been on humira but beginning to think it is starting to lose its benefit for me as seem to be having constant difficulty the last few months. hey ho! Must keep smiling (she says through gritted teeth!)

This was one of the first RA symptoms I got - first thing in the morning it felt like I had been out all night dancing in high heels when I'd done no such thing! I too have had a lot of help from my lovely podiatrist.

yes, I got that too....feeling like I'd been out in high heels!! and when I did, my feet hurt even more for about 2-3 weeks afterwards....its flat shoes all the way now for me :-( occasionally i wear wedges if I'm going out!!!

insoles are great, but you can't wear them with all shoes, and being only 35 I want to wear shoes that are on trend too....!
