Question that is ... :)

Why do some people have steroid injections and some, like me, take tablets?

The injection can just be a quick fix sometimes if you're having a flare up. I take the tablets but occasionally have to have a jab of 80mg when its really active.

I take a host of medications which don't really help just keep my A,S at bay so, my consultant gave me 80mg injection and wrote me up for regular 40mg injections every 3 month.

I think it depends on the consultant, what meds you take and how well they work.

It can be down to your consultant.. I was offered injection when really bad before first diagnosis.. but chose tablets as I remembered my aunt had an allergic reaction to a steroid injection and decided tablets were a safer option for me just incase!.. both work.. steroid tablets take longer too take affect but can be more flexible If needed for longer courses .

when I had my first course and I had a bad patch I took extra for a couple days.. but that is personal for me, it is also my " trade" and my GP and I have a great relationship and he knows I will be sensible and levels my tapering for me to do.

Hi Pete

Found out that oral steroids tend to make you gain weight, especially if taken at high dosage and or for a long time. Also very dangerous to just stop oral steroids, after 3wks of use. Must be stepped down under medical supervision.

Injected steroid although the dosage can be high is given once and time released over a period of time depending on individual on how long and effective it is. Thus less likely to gain weight from it.

Hope that helps?

Hi,

I'm one of the unlucky ones who has both. I think it all depends on your disease activity.

Take care
