New knees please....

Hello,

I thought I would update you all about my hospital visit on Monday. I saw my surgeon and I am getting new knees !!! I was a bit shocked as I was expecting a synovectomy on my left and replacement on my right but my rheumatologist has said that she can do nothing more as my RA is not being controlled so new knees for me. I on now on the waiting list for my left knee first then the other after recovery.

I am a bit concerned as I am only 41 but hopefully I will be a lot more mobile then I am now.

Has anyone had a replacement when they have been awake? The last op I had last year I had to be awake re the state my neck is in so don't suppose this will have changed and I am feeling abit stressed about that but also positive that this will make things better for me in the long run. Donna

Hi,

I had my first knee replaced at 36, and have since had both replaced and revised a few times, but I had joint damage going back to age 10. I am sure it will be so much better for you once you get them replaced, especially as the consultant has said that's the best course. Have you seen your orthopaedic surgeon yet?

Regarding being awake, during knee surgery, you might find it quite difficult as the is quite a few noises. I always have an epidural, and then anaesthesia that keeps me lightly asleep, I remember once asking if someone was hanging a picture on the wall! Which I suppose was something to do with the knee! I then promptly went back to sleep. I also remember asking if I could turn over! I have no recollection at which ops this happened.

Really good luck with the ops and take care.

hi my sister was only 29 when she had her first knee replacement and 37 when she had her other one done last year she had her wrist done she has felt alot better since she had new knees but she is experiencing murmours with the first knee that was done she has been on enbrel which has also been a great help to her her consultant was unsure whether to do these operations due to her age but she has no regrets and as had a different lifestyle since so i hope your operations goes well and you start feeling better when your recovered from them both

Hello Donna

The staying awake bit was fine for me though a bit boring. Suggest taking iphone or whatever to play music or listen to story. For me epidural was much more to be preferred than general anaesthetic as that seems to cause sickness afterwards. Also I like to know what is going on.

Knee has been absolutely brilliant from fairly soon after the operation and it has made such a difference to my mobility. I am looking forward to having right knee replaced soon.

Donna, I have had a new knee with epidural and i took my ipod with me,but you'll find that you nsleep anyway as they do give you sedation as well.. I have had to have that knee redone as it was causing me trouble. I was getting on alright with this knee until i got an infection in then top part of my scar. Seven days of strong antibiotics now waiting for the area to dry up now. It doesn't look a pretty site i can tell you.

I wish you well in your op. sylvi.xx
