Ibuprofen/Anti-inflammatories + Methotrexate

I read somewhere that we should not take Methotrexate and Ibuprofen/Anti-inflammatories (incl. Aspirin) at the same time? Is this true?

Did anyone take them together? what did your consultants say about this? x

I think it's fine. Here is a link to the Methotrexate booklet that the hospital gave me, you can download it.

Oh yeah, can't remember where I saw that about interactions with anti-inflammatories, but I guess if it says that is ok on here, it should be fine. THANKS! x

For many of us taking anti-inflammatories and simple pain killers like aspirin alongside our other drugs is what we do. There's an ideal world, and there’s RA world..

You just need to be aware of possible interactions so you can be alert to any warning signs.

Yes, will be careful :) thank you helix! x

In the early days of my diagnosis, my then rheumy gave me Sulfasalazine alongside Voltorol/Diclofenac tablets. Not allowed to take anti inflammatories now, but for the life of me I can't remember why.

wow :)

My new pharmacist says never take inflammatories on methotrexate day as can cause bleeding. My old pharmacist never told me and I use to get the most amazing bruises Rheumatologist dropped my dose thinking it was my methotrexate. Now on max dose no bruising and NSAIDs on this day . Looks like my pharmacists is right. I was never told this by Rheumatologist.

Hmmm I will be very careful and take paracetamol instead I guess. It's just Aspirin really helps me with the cold in the Winter. But I guess I can just take paracetamol x

Best to be on the safe side. Maybe take co-codamol or codeine on this day if pain is bad.

Yeah. My problem is that Paracetamol and Codeine make me extremely constipated :((

A few months ago I had this problem my gp refused to prescribe naproxen and told me not to take ibuprofen either as I was on methotrexate. I rang my rheumatologist for advice who told me it was fine to take them together as gp's are over cautious when it comes to methotrexate and anti inflammatories. I had some issues with bruising at the time. Instead I now take co codamol but I do still take ibuprofen on my bad days and its like J1707 I avoid them on methotrexate day just to be on the safe side.

What’s the naproxen max strength? It’s 500 mg a tablet right? I can’t take more than that unfortunately as I get bad reactions :/ also it never helps me with the pain sadly x

I'm not sure as my gp won't prescribe it to me so I've never took it before, I take ibuprofen along with co codomal.

Rheumy told me to take Naproxen at maximum dose alongside MTX until they could give me an appointment for steroid injections.

My GP wouldn't give me Ibuprofen as I 'm on Methotrexate, then agreed to one tab daily!

I think the main issues with aspirin and methotrexate with anti inflammatory’s is that mtx can impair your liver function and so can aspirin etc. Best to be cautious and take an alternative on mtx days. Unfortunately I can’t tolerate mtx or aspirin or anti inflammatory’s my liver says no and so does my stomach to mention one or two side affects. We are all different though but I would find unusual bruising to be a warning sign. We are all different though what can be ok for one person will not be ok for another. I would add ibuprofen and diclofenac to the list if you have an aspirin intolerance because they are aspirin based. Diclofenac only impaired my vision though.
