Bullous Pemphigoid

Waiting on 2nd biopsy to confirm I have bullous pemphigoid (skin rash/hives with blisters) . First diagnosed with eczema, started light therapy and rash exploded all over my body. Dr. put me on prednisone for 9 days (night sweats brutal, and took biopsy which came back as a drug reaction). As soon as I stopped rash and mostly hives came back with a vengeance and started getting blisters. Went back got steroid shot ( night sweats again), put me on minocycline (3 month course) and another biopsy. Waiting on biopsy results. Been 2 weeks since shot & starting antibiotic, most of hives and blisters gone but now some keep popping up. Does anyone know if this is normal? Hoping the steroid and minocycline would knock it out but maybe it has to run its course?

Hoping your skin calms down for you asap. I had a somewhat similar experience years ago following a terrible allergic reaction to stainless steel screws used in error rather than the specified titanium screws in a hip surgery. I developed a hospital-acquired MRSA infection after the same procedure a year later on the other hip even though titanium screws were used. The infection continued for three years even with iv and oral antibiotics plus steroids and many surgeries to remove infected tissue/bone. A weird feature of the horrible ordeal was that I would get a huge number of blisters on the soles of my feet and the palms of my hands as well as hives each time I had a fever. The blisters/pustules seemed like they were pushing out through the skin from inside. Eventually the stainless steel screws were removed which resolved the allergic reactions and the infection subsided, but it was an absolutely awful period. Really feel for you.

Guys I’ve not come across other people with blisters too. I have them at the moment all over my hands and feet. After a while all the skin peels off and I’m currently shedding like a snake. I’ve often wondered what they are. I get hives and angioedema too. Have you found anything that helps at all? Every steroid cream fails.

It does seem to be rather unusual, yet here we are with several people reporting similar conditions. I think my three years of blisters were a reaction to the infection I was experiencing, but it’s possible there was an allergic component too. Antibiotics and steroids seemed to be what eventually made them go away. Recently when I had a stubborn and large patch of hives not helped by steroid creams or tablets prescribed by a dermatologist, I switched to over the counter creams containing zinc (white and very messy) which helped some, and then started using an aloe gel. Took many months, but they are 95 percent gone now. Hope you feel better soon!

Thank you! 3 years is along time to deal with this stuff! So glad you are finally seeing progress! Appreciate all the suggestions of the creams with zinc and aloe gel...I will definitely keep those in mind!

My husband developed this five months ago. It took him over two months before a doctor would see him and a further couple of months before he saw a dermatologist. Apparently pharmacists deal with rashes here, or not. He is now three weeks into a three month course of antibiotics and there has been an improvement. However, when the blisters burst it leaves gaping raw patches which are very very difficult to heal and have to be dressed several times a week at the surgery. He has been told that it will take at least eight weeks and probably longer before the rash heals but I am skeptical.

The point of my post is to say, having seen my husband’s struggles, you have all my sympathy and I hope you are soon back to normal. Wishing you all the best.

Thank you so much and I sympathize with your husband as well. I'm 6 weeks out after the intial eczema diagnosis for 2 weeks and then when light therapy made it explode we started steroids and on second round of steroids they added an antibiotc, Its been a nightmare but hearing there may be an end is comforting. Thank you!

My son had something similar years ago as a young adult with large round blisters which would burst. Extremely uncomfortable. The raw patches were very alarming and painful. It looked like he had multiple burns. He too had dressings which needed frequent changing and made him look like a mummy. Horrible condition, but it did somehow eventually stop. It was very wearing on him, even though he was young and healthy.

I had forgotten about it, but I’m just remembering now that both my son and I experienced something similar decades ago that was diagnosed as an allergic reaction to wasabi.

My sympathies to your husband.
