Therapies for RA

Hi I have rheumatoid arthritis and take methotrexate (which has now been increased)and hydroxychoroquine. I am also doing physio to help with my ankle.I just wondered if anyone can recommend any therapies that also help (like massage or acupuncture)?

Thanks.

I don't know of any therapies, but from my own experience I know that exercise is very important and helpful. Tai Chi and QiGong together with other regular exercise have strengthened me physically and mentally. QiGong is an excellent starting point. Maybe look into it? You have nothing to lose. My best wishes.

Thank you. I will look into it.

Thank you. I will definitely look at this. I have had glandular fever in the past and 15 years ago was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid (my mum also has this) which is also autoimmune. I think a build up of inflammation has been happening for quite a while.

I do already take some supplements and I'm considering trying an anti inflammatory diet.

Thank you for your reply and sending the link.

Be careful RA is systematic so not just about inflammation it can be linked with blood clots, lung issues, etc etc. It might be worth reading the NRAS website for more information and bear in mind you might not be ever diagnosed with it. In that case is it lifestyle or simply luck? I believe we all benefit from some lifestyle choices like not smoking, staying active and a balanced diet. But I’m not sure it then follows we can avoid some diseases that need treating. As someone else wrote recently that their RA consultant had remarked a lot of RA in India where the diet might be seen as anti inflammatory naturally. Nothing wrong with trying to be as healthy as possible but don’t be upset if doesn’t work and then you need to take medication as it’s not your fault.

Thank you. I will definitely look at this.(I just replied but not sure if it went to you.)

I have also got an underactive thyroid (so has my mum) and had glandular fever in the past. Probably have had inflammation building up for years.

I take some supplements and I'm thinking of trying an anti inflammatory diet.

Thanks again for replying and sending this link.

Hi thanks for replying. I have had RA for almost 2 years now. I'm on methotrexate(injections now as tablets gave me lots of side effects) and hydroxychoroquine. I've just been looking into trying possibly acupuncture or Massage as complimentary treatments.

I feel like all I do is go to hospital appointments and so wondering if anything else might help alongside the meds. I find it all quite debilitating and it gets me down at times.

I was also offered changing to anti tnf biologics if the increased dose of methotrexate isn't helping enough.

Thank you so much. What a wonderful read, and certainly something I will investigate further. I do believe that most things can be cured from a holistic approach. I am 65 and raised my daughter, who had epilepsy, natutally, her diet, and other factors. That was years ago, obviously. So, I am going to check how I can adopt this approach. I have the knowledge, and fortunately here in South Africa, organic produce is easy to get. I'm a vegetarian, do not eat gluten ir dairy. I'll chat to my GP, who is most apposed to prescribing unnecessarily.

Thank you again.

Thai Chi, I do it first thing every morning after completing an 8 week course (over 2 years ago) at the Royal London Hospital for Integrated Medicine (RLHIM), formerly the Royal London Homeopathic Hospital. I also find Acupuncture which I've used on/off forbnearly 30 years. I also use Raw Turmeric (you will need to check contradictions with Medicines) , black pepper and Coconut water in my Vitamix machine. I also have multiple food intolerances so exclude the foods that I know trigger inflammation for me.

Thank you. Useful to know. I was thinking of trying acupuncture and doing some physio exercises right now.I'm taking vitamin D, turmeric and omega 3 at the minute.
