my husband has been poorly for 3 weeks. diorhea and vomiting. his second stool test has come back campalybacter. Feeling selfish my concern is myself I'm worn out waiting on him and looking after him, I'm already very conscious of strict hygiene. Is there anything else I should be doing to prevent getting it. I'm RA and PA on methotrexate and orencia. thanks
Campalybacter: my husband has been poorly for 3 weeks... - NRAS
Campalybacter
my hubby had that 2 yes ago and he was in hospital for 4 days but he was strict when using the bathroom ie bleach and towels and I just slept away from him til we got the ok 2 weeks after leaving hospital. It’s not nice for them 🥰
thanks this is the second time he's had it I feel for him he looks so poorly. he was in hospital for 3 weeks first time this time just sent antibiotics. we should have gone on a cruise yesterday first holiday since covid outbreak, obviously cancelled. probably why I felt sorry for myself, over it now. x
My husband had this as a child we only found out when he had pain in his chest and they put a camera down and saw ulcers. Apparently the chap who discovered the link got a Nobel Prize as he had a cure so it was treatable. He had two types of antibiotics for a year. So I hope your husband gets better soon and be aware not only for yourself but any child he might be in contact with.
Sorry, you are confusing this with stomach ulcers disease, campylobacter is a pathogen in food, usually in badly cooked or raw chicken, which gives dreadful food poisoning.
My daughter had it after a music camp, public health closed down the kitchens, and the staff had to be retrained. It is very debilitating, and if untreated can be fatal
Pasjc, I do hope your husband recovers soon. Plenty of fluids for him, and strict hygiene measures for you I am afraid.
I do hope you manage your cruise later on x
It’s true a link was discovered in 2005 and the two drs got the Nobel Prize, you can look it up. There was a tv programme about it but my husband had it some 50 years ago. Apparently it thins the lining of the stomach thus ulcers can develop. Treated with antibiotics even 50 years later it stopped the ulcer. Isn’t it the same family as Hpylori?
You are right that it was found that many stomach ulcers are caused by a bacteria, but it is helicobacter pylori which causes stomach ulcers, which is a completely different species to campalybacter. H pylori mainly affects the stomach, whereas cmpalybacters mainly affect further down the digestive system.
Indeed you are absolutely right. My husband had precisely that treatment. But campylobacter is an entirely different organism!!!
I looked this up yesterday as you made me doubt my memory and internet said they changed the name of Camp to H pylori. I'm not a scientist and just asked my husband and he said they did a blood test which was positive for H pylori and then the camera then the long course of antibiotic. It don't take much to confuse me these days. lol In fact I've a lovely lump on my head as fell asleep after reading your post and dropped my iPad on my forehead. I'm blaming you lol lol xxx Huge lump this morning and I'm wondering if I'll get a black eye too, as it's red and puffy. I think Dr Mosley did something about it on TV which we watched and my husband ponged of antibiotics a dreadful sweet sticky smell. lol xxx
I've kept all visitors away so hopefully it won't spread. thanks for your reply xx
I hope he's better soon and you keep safe. I can cope with most things but vomit eeekkk. It's exhausting isnt it? And my husband is never a good patient. If its a cold its always Spanish flu and he needs sympathy as well as tea. And being sympathetic is hard after days cleaning up. Stay strong and treat yourself or get him to treat you when he's better. A nice meal somewhere posh might be a good motive to make up temporarily for the missed cruise. On the other hand imagine being on a ship with it and confined to one room. Better to wait for the holiday and enjoy it. XXX
Sending best wishes. No wonder you're feeling down being so careful all the time and missing a much looked forward to holiday. Hopefully hubby will be better soon.
Poor him - and you. I’ve had campylobacter several times, though I don’t recall vomiting,, but as long as you both practise good hygiene I think you’ll be fine.
You don’t need to mask up, main thing is making sure you wash your hands before you eat or touch your food.
My partner didn’t catch it so I think basic handwashing stops the spread, though I don’t envy you all the clearing up etc. Presume he’s got some antibiotics so hopefully will be in the mend soon. Do remember to look after yourself too X
I know some stomach ulcers can be caused by Helicobacter pylori discovered by dr Barry Marshall in 1984. Iremember reading his article in the newspaper then being tested some years later for it which came back negative. Mine was caused by high dose aspirin in 1978 which was an early treatment for RA. Don’t think I have had campylobacter before but it sounds awful. Hope your husband is better soon and that you avoid catching it.
hi I’m sorry to hear about your husband & your cruise. Poor you it can be exhausting looking after someone when you’re not good yourself. My hubby got Campylobacter in June on holiday abroad. He was very ill in bed ( or on the loo) for a week. We were very worried about getting him home on the plane but our flight got cancelled so we stayed an extra 3 days & with Imodium managed to get him home & straight to drs. Whilst on holiday we were in the situation where we could use separate loos & separate towels. We still slept in the same bed & I never caught it (which is a miracle as usually I catch anything going). I am like you immunosuppressed on Biologics so hope this reassures you somewhat.
I got it years ago b drinking unfiltered water on a hike. Was told it was from high fecal counts in the stream I drank out of. Definitely not good. Hope you and your husband recover from this.
