The thing with the new pen is you are tempted to push it against the skin like with the old style ones. One fast movement, don't hesitate just press into the skin quickly like using an epi pen if you have ever seen it done. They don't have a cover on the needle like the old ones so you will feel the needle if it isn't one swift movement. I'm scared of needles but I think these new ones are much better and easier and I haven't done one that has hurt at all. There is one click when it starts and a second when it has finished, literally 3 or 4 seconds.

I hope you can get the hang of them soon, good luck.

I am having the same issue. I have never felt any sharp jab from the old style in over 4 years. Now I’m dreading injection day as it stings. I am a health professional so used to injecting, but not loving this new pen😔

I feel the same, they are not as easy to use and I too have leakage from the new ones. Why do they have to change something that worked?

I had problems too till I actually read the instructions . The old style you had to press the top, on these new style you need to keep your thumb far away & let the pen do the work . It really is easier but our long learned habits die hard. Just look at the pictures in the instructions and you’ll see it’s a new trick you have to learn. Much love x

I also had this problem and the chemist was so rude to me. I find if you take the lid off slowly while holding it upright the liquid doesn’t come out. And if you place it and do it quick it stings a lot less x

I am sorry to hear that. I think they are wonderful. No pain and so much better than previously. 1 click and it’s over. I am not feeling a thing. I wonder why yours are not the same?

I haven't had any spillage problems or any pain when the needle goes in but I do get stinging as it comes out and just afterwards. A bit ouchy but thankfully goes quickly. If I'm honest, I did prefer the other ones but I can appreciate that they would have been tricky for anyone with weak or painful thumbs.

I had the same problem. I read the instructions and watched the video. The metofill leaked and caused a red, itchy rash which lasted for 4/5 days. I've asked the GP if I can return to the metoject pen

I still get the red itchy rash with the new pen?

I couldn’t get on with them at all. Perhaps as suggested I needed to read the leaflet a bit more🤷‍♀️. I request the old style ones, which at the moment I’m able to get( I live in Jersey). Are they discontinuing the old style ones?

I stopped the pen for Benapali as I found it really to hard to use, in favour of injections which are easy, need no pressure and painless. Might be worth asking to change to injections. RA affects my right hand only with some nerve damage from an unrelated injury from whiplash so I just could not press down at all. Hope that helps.

Have just moved onto the new style methotrexate pen, but no problem to use it as my Benepali is the same type of pen, but I do agree it is now a double ouch each week, instead of one! The springs in these pens must be made by same manufacturer’s as pneumatic drills!!! I inject on my tummy and have to pinch a chunk of the skin for pens to work as there is way to much soft movable cushiony fat to depress needle guard (say no more on that one)!!

I think it develops a delayed sting that the old pen didn’t but it’s not too bad and I don’t feel anything at when injecting.

I'm used to giving and having injections of various types.

Agree need to take cap off slowly or liquid appears. It seems you place the needle end on injection site slide it down it engages, puts needle into muscle injects, ( count to 5 ) usual ends before reaching 5 but I wait till I finish counting then carefully lift off.

Having said this I find it stings more when in my thigh occasionally some MTX residue. I force myself to take my time doing it.

In the end using what works for you is the most relevant thing .

I've just used my first metoject pen after changing from mtx tablets x 10, which had start making me feel nauseous for hours.I read the instructions and watched and followed the video. I only felt a slight sting from the needle and thought- great, that was easy. Quite soon afterwards though, I can see a raised lumpy area about 1 inch x 1.5 inches at the site on my thigh which is slightly yellow in colour.

Have I done something wrong?

It sounds like you might have hit a small blood vessel, as the yellow skin looks like start of bruising. Hopefully this should settle and disappear after a week. If lump becomes warm and very tender, then see a pharmacist or GP as it maybe an infection if the methotrexate has tracked back up the needle line to surface skin. I had to inject daily for 3 weeks blood thinner and my abdomen was a serious of little yellow bruise marks where I had hit small blood capillaries. This happens, but if you get this all the time, review your technique with your Rheumy Nurse. The will get absorbed and skin returns back to normal. Hope that helps reassure you.

I inject into my plump tummy and usually it doesn’t hurt, maybe twice in a year. I would imagine if you inject elsewhere then yes I can see that it would hurt and leak , never had a leak.Maybe read leaflet and see if that helps. Good luck

I’ve read through these comments and have seen that people seem to be commenting on 2 different products: Metoject and Metofill. I use Metoject which is the epipen style. I did notice a bit of leakage when removing the top of the ‘new’ style pens. I prefer this style to the previous one where you had to squeeze a roll of skin and press the top on the pen with your thumb. I often get a bit of pain shortly after injection but it passes very quickly.

Last month my GP made a mistake with my prescription and I got Metofill. This is a syringe style injection. I can’t manage this type so contacted my GP and got a new prescription. This happened when I was transferred from hospital administered prescriptions to GP administered.

I also use Adalimubab and that has a similar applicator to the Metoject so easy to use.

The nurse advised me to hold the pen in place with slight pressure for 10 seconds after the click to help absorption of the drug. I do this for both drugs.

I would rather have the pain from the needle than the pain from RA 😟

l preferred the old style these new ones are bloody awful. I read the huge leaflet to familiarise myself on how to use them but still ended up bloody & bruised. When l get near to the end of my prescription l think l may request if l could go back to the old style. I used to experience a little sting with the old ones but the sting with these new style is worse. 😣
