New Style Metoject Pen

hi all,

What, if any, has been your experience of the new style metoject pens? I have only used two of the new ones. On the plus side they’re smaller and easier to handle but boy do they sting!! The old ones never bothered me at all and I could hardly tell afterwards but the new ones are quite painful and have caused slight bleeding. I’m using them in the same areas as before so was surprised at the difference. Anyone else tried them?

I use Metoject Pens manufactured by Medac, a German company. I've always been supplied with this Brand. Sometimes it stings when I inject and other times it doesn't.

Hi thanks for the replies. It's the new style Metoject pen metoject.co.uk/patients/new... had a text from Sciensus with the above link advising of the change a little while back. Then last week I was given them by the hospital pharmacy in my interim prescription.

I'll still use them, no matter how much they sting as I'm desperate for the meds but I'm curious as to how others find them or maybe I'm doing something wrong.

Hi I have been seeing notes in my metoject boxes that a new model is on the way. Thank you for prompting me to look online and read the instructions for using the new model. Main difference seems to be that you don't have to squeeze a bulge of flesh to inject into, just inject into a flat area of tummy or thigh. I'll know what to do when the new model arrives, and will keep my fingers crossed that stings, bleeding and bruises are sporadic, as now, rather than more frequent. It appears that we don't have any choice in this.

Yes that's right. They're actually much easier to handle, especially if my hands are stiff. I'll try a different area next week and see how that goes.

I've not had any as yet but got a message last month they were changing them. I find mtx can be fine 1 week and sting the next. I always inject in my stomach as there's more cushioning. 😂 Last weeks injection hit a blood vessel and bled quite a bit and left a 3inch round bruise, but it's a rarity it bleeds. I'm sure we'll all get use to them eventually 👍

Me too 😂 but I might try my leg next week and see how that goes.

I'm about to have a new supply sent to me by the hospital pharmacy; nothing has been said about it being a different design so I'll wait and if it is, I'll post on this thread.

I got a delivery last week and there was a note in to say there could be old and new but I just got the original ones so probably next time as they filter through.

Hi HeadInASpin. When I was on Methotrexate, I couldn’t use either. I was also appalled by the huge amount of plastic waste. I’m now on Etanercept (Benepali) biologics and requested small ordinary syringes. I have no problems using those.

I've just had a delivery and I've got the new style ones 😊 Grateful for this thread as otherwise I would have wondered what was going on!I've got three of the old ones left but when I start using the new ones I'll report back 😁

I just used the new methotrexate pen for the first time and it properly stings!! Any tips on how to avoid this?

I thought it was just me! Sorry Mewline I haven’t got any tips, I tried injecting my thighs but that was worse so I’ve gone back to my spare tyre. I found the old style completely painless so I can’t understand why these sting sooo much. If you or anyone else has any tips or tricks I’m all ears!

I used them for first time this weekend. It hurt a lot! Much more than a « bad day » with previous design - three days ago snd I can still feel where it went in. Nearly made me cry as it was a shock and it depressed me to think it might be like that every week… won’t be good for protocol compliance if it is… I will obviously still take but it’s a bit of a shocker. Hoping it’s a one off… at least it’s less plastic!

hi.

I really don’t like the new pens. As you say they hurt when administered, draw blood & mine has left me with a bruise about 7cm in diameter. I know it sounds stupid but the needle felt much bigger. I have NEVER had any of those with the old style. My hospital are a where I don’t like them so going to see what happens

yes. I don’t like them. They sting , feels like the needles are much bigger than before, I know they’re not, I get bleeding occasionally & they’re always a drop of the fluid on my skin when the pen is removed. Never had that with the old ones. Also get terrible bruising, never had to at before.

On the whole not liking the new pens. I am going to see if I can change when I next see Dr. I do keep advising the pharmacy, but they said the old style no longer available 🥲😬

Used the new style for the first time just now. Did it in my usual place on the side of my thigh (fatty bit!) and it was fine. I did manage to hit a thread vein so it bled a bit but that's happened before - must try to look more carefully next time! No stinging 😁

Same here, I have used the button ones for years with no problems but the new buttonless ones sting like hell

Hi, my mum is using this new pen, but he arthritis has got much worse, she thinks the dose is way less than the other pen despite it saying its the same dose. Is anyone else having issues with the dose or having symptoms coming back? Thanks!

I can't say I noticed because my RA hasn't been controlled yet. I must admit I'm enjoying the respite from the new pens while my liver recovers.
