Help. Metoject pen fail

Garnacha profile image
17 Replies

Hi everyone, just administered my metoject, counted to 10 then removed and most of the liquid ran across my stomach, there's definitely a puncture hole in my stomach, there's a tiny bit left but can't reinject, but no idea what I should do.

Haven't got the use of a helpline, all I could do is try & get hold of gp Monday.

Any advice appreciated x

They can fail at times, but don't inject another one as you do not know how much has gone in. Missing one usually doesn't matter but ring your GP Monday if you are concerned.

Good advice from Bootoo. It's happened to me twice. Please don't be tempted to inject again. Shouldn't be a problem, it's only one week. Better luck next time!

It happened to me a couple of times. Don't inject again just wait for your next one . Put it this way I am not the slimmest of people and I think that was my problem so I switched to injecting into the upper thigh on alternate legs each week. I think by injecting downwards when seated helps and I have not had a problem since.

Don’t worry about it. It happens! Just leave it until next week as one missed week won’t make a great difference.

Thanks everyone, the only thing that concerns me the most is I had to miss 2 doses as I was so ill, my joints have been getting so painful & only started back last week , think I'll email the surgery tomorrow (easier than waiting on hold for hours 😉) just so they know x

As you injected some I wouldn't inject another and risk an overdose. I'd leave it for this week and start again next week

The first fail does take you by surprise. It happens with the pens now & again unfortunately, I must have returned 5 or 6, usually it's failure to release. You'll need a replacement otherwise you'll be out before your next ones are ordered so place the pen in a plastic bag, a nice thick one, & put it back in the box. Don't inject again, whilst it seems the spillage was a lot you will have injected some especially if you have a puncture mark. Put whatever you used to wash everything down in the sharps box, paper towels hopefully, & make sure if it went anywhere other than your tum it is washed really well, again disposing in the box.

If it makes you happier do contact your team & ask for their advice.

I’ve had this happen a few times I just binned it and took it the following week Don’t think it does any harm to miss it once

I agree with the previous comments. Happened to me the second time but not since. I try to keep the pressure on for that 10 second count. I trust that you cleaned the MTX up off your flesh. It is cytotoxic. When I first started using it, I was provided with gloves, a mask, goggles and an apron to clear any spills up! A bit OTT but it shows that there is a concern about the liquid but don't get over anxious.😏

Morning, same advice leave it for a week. To put your mind at rest just e mail doctors as you said but you have done the right thing😉

I swapped to injections as those pens are dreadful . It's much easier and you don't even feel the needle go in. So much better as you can control it.

Oh I didn't know injections were an option, but until now I've found the metoject really easy & totally painless x

Your really lucky but my RA isn't responsible I had a problem with a disk in my neck a long time ago and my right hand is not very strong so I found it nigh on impossible to use a pen. lol x

When I changed to subcut they were prefilled injections, before pens were available. I agree, much better being able to control it & I never had one fail, nothing that can basically. When I restarted my meds at my competency test they were pens which were provided so I asked if I could have syringes instead & told no. I checked NHS & found they were available but still told no. I might have another go at asking as it's been many years since.

I had the same happen with my very first Adalimumab injection the other week and cried to see it run down me. Decent puncture mark that was bleeding and all. I was told definitely not to inject more and to wait for the next injection. Having done some more I‘m now fairly confident it was a problem with the pen. It‘s almost identical to the metoject pen so I guess this happens sometimes. Very frustrating though.Wait until next week and if you have a responsive Rheumy nurse on email maybe let them know. Especially if you think things are bad enough to need steroids/a steroid injection. Good luck with the next one 🤞🏻

Thank you, at present I don't have a rheumy team just the private consultant who to be fair has been brilliant, I'm on the NHS waiting list but was told in May it was a 77 weeks wait from when they received the request from the gp, this was sent in March even though the consultant asked for it to be done in January 😠

I spoke to the surgery this morning & was told I need to notify the manufacturer!

I guess I've been lucky so far as this is the first time its happened since I started it around 8 weeks ago, think I'll also stick to doing it in my thighs from now on x
