High serum creatinine: Hi im in a panic dr has worried... - NRAS
High serum creatinine
I'm not making many comments but as I do have CKD I thought best to post something. Firstly CKD is not diagnosed on a one off reading of creatine but the GFR which is a very complicated calculation and beyond my explaining it. But creatine levels vary based on level of exercise as say you'd run to get the blood test or eaten a mean with a lot of meat or even just are getting older it will go higher and if it helps my creatine is 176 but my GFR 27 which takes into account height, age, weight etc. So firstly don't panic but do try to drink at least 3 pints of water a day squash is fine too and get your next blood test. Even if your GFR is reduced its not an automatic death sentence everyone's kidney function decreases with age like our teeth change and hearts change too. Try to steer clear of bananas, grapes, cola and brown gravy but diet doesn't really apply until your function is really low and to be frank creatine of 97 isn't that bad. It might be a medication needs adjusting as the kidneys clear a lot of medications so might need a bit of tweaking so try not to stress it really won't help and I lead a near enough normal life. Its definitely not over because of CKD and I'm being worked up for a major event but at 70 have not been written off by the NHS it is a blip but not a disaster even if your in shock, that it might first appear to be. Even if you do get a diagnosis of CKD which just means long lasting not more serious you'll see a Nephrologist who'll look after you and make sure your medication all are correct and mine is lovely. Always just at the end of the phone and seen every three months. One thing you might find is Alendronic Acid won't be given if you've a risk of Osteoporosis but there are alternatives and even so the B12 and ADCl D3 prescribed will help the bones anyway. You can PM me if you want to chat if your really concerned although I can only advise you of my treatment but honestly its not hopeless and do stay well hydrated as most people don't drink enough.
PS Try to avoid NSAIDS like Ibrufen unless prescribed by your doctor who will be aware of your kidney function as if and it’s a big IF, if you do have an ongoing issue they may be totally banned. But again don’t assume it’s going to be any problem.
I went through a phase, a few years ago, when my creatinine went up & down wildly. I was even under the care of a nephrologist for a couple of years. Over the two years the consultant concluded there was no general reduction in kidney function & my results settled over time.
this happened to me last year . Gp was convinced in kidney failure.had another test and all was fine .explanation was test spoilt. I keep urine sticks now and test every other week
