I`ve just called my Drs for my latest blood test results. The liver GT is down from last month, shows it`s the leflunomide then, but my serum one is high enough for them to want me to go and see the GP this afternoon. What on earth is serum one??????

Hiya, blood serum is blood without the white or red cells or any other bits in the blood do sorta " pure" blood. So it's a good indicator of tests. Hope it goes well this afternoon snd you get some answers xxxx
Hiya Slumberparty. This is a real case of a little knowledge isn't always a good thing although not in your instance, you only queried what it meant. But think of a scenario of an old person, living on their own having no-one to ask, worrying having been asked to see their GP that afternoon being told the same thing. It's something I've come across in a former life! Receptionists, (rottweilers we call them at our practice) working in a medical environment with no medical qualifications handing out information & advice they haven't a clue about. I used to send ours on courses to knock it out of them & it did but only for a couple of weeks or so & then they reverted to type. It's the nature of the job was the conclusion the partners came to which isn't solving the problem.
My 83 year old f-i-l recently has recently been considerably more unwell than normal recently (he has a heart condition) & it was only when we noticed that his dosage had been changed on one of his many tablets it clicked. His specialist had increased the dosage of one of his drugs recently & he needed a repeat prescription. He takes 3 a day of his normal dose, as prescribed. The receptionist in her wisdom decided to change dose of the tablet on his new prescription to double, "thinking he would halve a tablet to make up the difference in his increase" but omitted to tell him that she'd done so. It would be impossible to halve these tablets as the tablets are a squat spherical shape with no marking to break in two. The higher dose tablets are the same shape, size & colour - the only difference is his usual one is imprinted 250 micrograms the new one 500 micrograms. One way he was affected was he had blurred vision & therefore he didn't notice any difference to his normal ones. Long story short what we thought was another complication relating to his existing condition was in fact him unknowingly overdosing, dangerously so, considerably over the maximum daily dose of a very potent drug. Had we not questioned his failing health & his weekly blood tests his home visit heart nurse takes showing he was in liver failure & further blood tests taken to investigate why, the longer it would have built up in his system. The consequences could have been tragic. All for the sake of a receptionist with no medical experience taking it into her own hands to alter a tablet to "help him".
That is disgraceful no more heals. They are lucky he didn`t sue them. I hope a complaint was put in.
In my case I went armed with my mobile to google the mysterious serum one. Asked for a print out and went to wait for my appointment. As soon as I opened it I saw the result she was talking about, and am still mystified how she read it as that. This is the same receptionist who told me to lower my alcohol consumption after my last blood test. How you can lower nothing I have no idea.
Yes, but it doesn't help as our GPs are now giving them more "power" by sanctioning them to ask details as to why you wish to make an appointment with the doctor. Loaded gun waiting to go off imo. I just don't get it just glad I don't work there any more to take the flack from the patients. He's in a bad place at the moment anyway my f-i-l as his wife died in February & he did everything he could for her as she had Parkinson's. His own illness has now worsened as a result & struggles. We do all we can for him, but we're not in the best of health either!! Ah well there are lots worse off
It beggars belief how she interpreted your result & hope you told her to mind her own regarding how much alcohol you do or don't drink. Although having said that my Rheumy has said that to me before now & like you I don't drink. It's not our fault if our livers don't determine if it's booze or meds that make it have a benny is it?!!!
