Sorry it’s Kate again : Can anyone help me, does anyone... - NRAS
Sorry it’s Kate again
I know nothing about etoricoxib…..but Personally in over 20+ years of RA I have never experienced a drug that works in such a short time,
You really do have to give these drugs time…weeks, possibly months are more the timescale you need to be thinking about.
I hope it suits you and when it kicks in I hope it works for you but don’t get too stressed if it does take more time than you hoped for.
If your pain is getting worse, speak to your Rheumy nurse and see if she can add something to tide you over..
Actually, I’ve just read etoricoxib is a cox2inhibitor, not a DMARD as I thought at first, so I think you definitely need to speak to your Rheumatology Nurses as on the site I read about it saysit is not prescribed in the UK! But I looked again & this came up
Yourvdoctor may prescribe a type called a COX-2 inhibitor, such as celecoxib or etoricoxib. These medicines can help relieve pain while also reducing inflammation in the joints, although they will not stop rheumatoid arthritis getting worse over time……
So it does look like you need more advice
I will try to get the n touch with Rhemy team it’s not easy, lve just found out u can take paracetamol with it, it’s not a bio drug just an anti inflammatory one, still waiting to go one , no meds since end of Nov, ; thank u so much for your reply Kate x
Hi Kate . It's so hard isn't it. Did they give you any painkillers or steroids at all? I found these helpful as in general the drugs can take up to twelve weeks to kick in.
I know that sounds like an eternity now but this might just be " the one!"
Also hot/cold pads helped me with the pain and you'll need good painkillers that work , but you will find GPS are generally the most knowledgeable on that topic. Good luck x
No, didn’t know u could take painkillers, lm just going to try paracetamol to see how that goes, thanks so much for reply Kate x
i take etoricoxib and paracetamol. If I have had a break from them in can take a few days for them to get going again.
thanks for your reply, l will try that , just took some paracetamol before going to bed , be nice to wake up with no pain it’s always bad in the mornings, thanks again Kate x
Hi Kate, for the morning have a breakfast bar by your bed to eat, so you can take your pain killers, so when you are ready to get out of bed you are already supported with pain relief. The breakfast bar or digestives are necessary.
Hope you are waking less sore. Can't remember how long it took eterocoxib to work for me but when I started I was eating paracetamol. I'll take eight paracetamol daily if required or mix and match with co codamol. Maybe you struggle with codine, apologies if I've forgotten that. If not suplhadine max is the strongest you get with out prescription.Don't take any aspirin or ibuprofen or naproxen type things with it as it's an n'said.
Thanks for coming back, not tried co codamol , lm just trying to see paracetamol works, still struggling in morning’s hopefully things will improve soon Kate x
Hopefully. I'm a great believer in paracetamol/co codamol. Currently I wake about five am take some then can get out of bed.
Can l ask do u have something to eat before thanks Kate, is that all u take ?
I usually take all tablets at breakfast. I take prednisolone, mtx by injection and a biologic. Also calcium and omeprazole. I don't consciously think need to eat before the eterocoxib because it's an N'said, but I'm lucky in that I have a fairly robust stomach and can cope with most meds.
I find it I take all together with breakfast I don't forget to take them then crash later in the day.
thanks for coming back, l was told to take omperozole an hour before Eterocoxib then have breakfast before l take it, think maybe l’ll take paracetamol early that might help
e Like others have said you can get a 90mg tablet. My doctor's used to give it but they changed the prescription guidelines. I did find it better but would only take it for long enough to get on top of the pain then reduce to the 60mg. Along with paracetamol.
thanks for that, it’s not working at the moment, day 5, l find not too bad going to bed, lm so bad in the morning, lunch myself p
Out of bed , then l use a chair that has wheels to bathroom and back to bedroom. I think my knee locks in bed and when l sit down, just one of problems , such a cruel disease we all have, sorry feeling really down , thanks for getting back Kate x
Hi KFor ne a bit if both but it's always been a bit hit and miss and I haven't taken it for a while. It seems to take longer to get going than ibuprofen, for example, but then unlike ibuprofen which wears off noticeably, etoricoxib accumulates if you keep taking it.
I'm a bit stuck for pain relief at the moment. Steroids was the only thing that brought me sustained relief but can't take them now because if narrow angles with high iop. Being seen for that in March .
Etoricoxib takes time to work. You should start to feel effects after a week. I have been on it for 20 years plus (off and on). On bad days I up my tablets and take a 90mg pill usually I just stick to a 60mg pill. It is shown to be good for inflammatory spondyloarthritis. I also take paracetamol if needed.
Hi there I was prescribed this drug about 4 weeks ago but after reading the information leaflet I decided against it. Aren't you not worried regarding the increased risk of stroke and heart attacks. My pain levels are really bad at moment and I'm wondering should I just start taking the drug. I would appreciate your thoughts if you can help me. Many thanks JC
I take a daily baby aspirin as well. Although at a different time to the etoricoxib. My rheumy wasn't that fussed. Because of litigation the drug companies list all possible side effects. I don't have a history of heart problems in my family so for me I am prepared to accept any risk however small . I would say try it and see how you feel after a couple of weeks. If no benefit then stop.
l was the same as u, really worried about the side effects, especially at my age 76,, but the pain and all the joints l have that are swollen, l decided to take it, on my 3 rd day now, still not working that well, still struggling to get out of bed, it takes a while to work, someone said to me u take paracetamol if u read the side effects would u take that, l think all our drugs we take have awful side effects, what choice is there , l wish u luck and hope things improve for you it is very hard at times Kate x
just remember not everyone gets
bad side effects x
when I was first prescribed this med, when it first came out, there was a big who ha in the press about all of these bad effects. So i had a long chat with my then GP, who was amazing, he said do you trust me, I said definitely, so he said take them, you will benefit and be fine, about 15 to 20 years later I am still on them with no ill effects what so ever and I am allergic to most drugs. Hope this helps in any way xx
As far as I am aware this is an anti inflammatory painkiller. I have taken in the past. It takes several days to a week to start to work I have found. I was advised of no improvement within 2 weeks stop taking. I believe you can take paracetamol at the same time but not ibuprofen. If you are struggling you can also speak to a pharmacist for advice while waiting to speak with your rheumatology team.
Etoricoxib is the only painkiller that works for me. It builds up in your system but I found it effective within a week. I hope it has the same magic for you.
Etoricoxib takes a few days to kick in fully but has worked well for me over the last 18ths alongside my mtx; certainly better than Diclofenac and Naproxen.
What dose are you on? I get 90mg pills and take 1 per day.
If your pain doesn’t settle perhaps ask about a steroid injection, which can work very quickly on your symptoms to offer relief.
Good luck.
Hi, I am on this tablet which I take before I go to bed , I have been on it for a few years , it has helped with my pain , takes a bit time , good luck 🤞
