Itchy tear ducts- not dry eye

Anyone? Every so often I get insanely itchy upper tear duct in my left eye, sometimes a little bit in the lower one. Occasionally the right eye too.It never makes my eyes water, feel gritty, or uncomfortable; it is specifically itchiness. Sometimes I give in and rub it, but then a cycle starts and it can go on for weeks.

I'm not allergic to anything and this has been going on for years.

I've scoured the internet and can't find anything about tear ducts only about dry eye and allergies.

Yes I do, and have had for a while. The last time I had my eyes tested I asked the optician to check my tear ducts as they can become so itchy but she could see nothing wrong.

Sometimes they become so irritated that I can rub them continuously, my eyes unlike yours stream with tears if I rub them too much and then then that makes the itching worse. Like you I try not to touch them as once I start its hard to stop rubbing them.

I use eye drops that were recommended to me by pharmacists Hyco scan as she thought it was an allergy but they do not really work. I would be very interested if anyone has found something that does. I take methotrexate and benapli both injected but do not think they are the cause.

it makes my nose run when I rub it! Drives me nuts. I use the Hycosan to but it doesn't do anything. I take a hyaluronic supplement and I've noticed it gets worse when I forget to take them but not 100%. I would just love to know what causes it. I often run out of the HA supplements and they're quite expensive.

I'm on hydroxychloroquine but it started before I started taking it.

I think everyone gets itchy eyes occasionally..especially at this time of year.

Stay indoors out of the cold that might help,

Surely you would get itchy eyes if your tear ducts are blocked?

Try doing what is recommended for that.

Hi A, thanks for the suggestion although I don't have any of the symptoms of blocked tear ducts.

hi, yes I have this, the itch is intense. I believe it may be associated with reactive arthritis although that is not my diagnosis or yours looking at your bio. But rheumatoid conditions are all so weird and mixed up so who knows. Mine only started a year ago as part of a host of symptoms that are still being investigated but started with heartburn and indigestion….. I’ve read reactive arthritis seems to occur following gut infections. My tests were negative for that but no cause found yet snd not a stills flare.

I do but I have blepharitis and dry eyes. I use systain balance eye drops 4 times a day. Plus xalin gel drops at night. Plus lately sodium cromoglicate drops. All prescribed by GP or eye hospital. The latter is given as gp thinks I also have allergies that make my eyes itch, dry and gritty. Also blepharitis eye wipes am and pm.

You could try this stuff - I started taking it for my bones but I discovered (when I ran out and didn’t replace them right away) that they do wonders for my very dry eyes - then I read the packet and discovered it is for brain and eyes! I buy mine from Amazon and I’ve been using it for a few years now, can definitely recommend them.

If there isn’t any swelling or discharge I think I’d treat it like dry eyes and use preservative free drops, the eye wipes, warm compresses, even try antihistamine etc.

This may sound odd (I do tend to be rather random!) but when my tear ducts are itchy, right one in particular for me, it usually signals an eyelash that is starting to grow inwards.

I have very dry, very allergic eyes so have four different bottles of drops to use each day along with hot compresses and massage so itchy eyes are par for the course. However, the very corner of the eye is a different itch! I try to encourage any lashes that are lying towards the corner of the eye to change position. My optometrist is happy to remove ingrowing eyelashes but it always happens on the days he's not there.
