itchy eye?

In addition to the yellowing nails, I have also had, for a good few years now an extremely itchy left eye. It emanates from the 'puncta', the tear duct at the top nearest my nose but all of the skin around it including on my nose also itches. Sometimes it's a bit red and inflamed even when I haven't given in and scratced it. The itch is overwhelming. I'm going to the optician tomorrow morning before starting hydroxychloroquine and I will ask again. If anyone else has this I will report back!

Could be blepharitis or some sort of mybomian gland disfunction in just the one eye. Hopefully your optician will be able to get you sorted out. When it’s very itchy have you tried a warm compress on it. Might help with the horrible urge to scratch.

Are you having an OCT scan before you start hydroxychloroquine and have you been told what to look out for when you start the hydroxychloroquine? Regular eye checks are a must with that.

I would speak to your dr about this as well as your optician.xxxx

Also speak to your GP as yellow nails can be a fungal infection. Our immunity to them is also reduced by our medication.

Thanks both - just come back from optician, he says the itch is just one of those things associated with dry eye. There is no swelling or redness (unless I scratch it).

That’s very good news, did you get some ‘dry eye’ drops? If you have put in a in regularly throughout the day that’s very good news, did you get some dry eyedrops? If you have keep putting them in regularly throughout the day rather than just once in the morning and once at night and take it from me - I don’t always practice what I preach - but keep using them even when your eye feels better, it’s only better because you’re using the drops.

Also, you are best with preservative free eyedrops.

Hi Fruitandnutcase, yes to both - have a bottle of really easy to use, it has a sort of press dropper so you can't go wrong and some individual daily use ones. Although, I tend only to use them when it starts up! Perhaps I should start using them a few times a day. Have you ever tried the Optrex sprays? They are pretty good.

Not what you're looking for?
