tear duct plugs for dry eyes

Hi all,

I saw my ophthalmologist yesterday who said I may benefit from tear duct plugs for my dry eyes. I said no for now as I never tolerated contact lenses with my eyes and think I will struggle with these too.

Has anyone had them in and what are your experiences good and bad?

I am currently using Thealoz Duo eye drops 5 times a day. Red eyes coming and going, and one episode of Episcleritis. I was diagnosed with RA this sept but think I have had it for around 3 years.

Thanks all x

Husband (retired optometrist) says to get the punctal plugs in as soon as you can. They are not like contact lenses and you won’t feel them at all. Having very dry eyes I sympathise with you.

In January 2020 I started taking Ekopura Vegan Omega 3 Algae Oil 90 Capsules (250Mg) | 250Mg DHA per Capsule for my bones then discovered they made a huge difference to my dry eyes so I’ve been taking them ever since. Might be worth trying them.

Hello. I've had them for about 3 years now. I was very, very reluctant at first but I can't feel them at all. They don't sit on your eye and are effectively well hidden in the tear duct and I only feel them if I rub my eyes. Which I shouldn't as I've lost a couple. They have made a huge difference and I would say try not to worry about them. It is a little unpleasant having them put in (but I was very freaked out by the whole idea which didn't help) but it was seconds off discomfort that was all.

Hi Gramma3,

I had a plug in one eye, it sits in your tear duct, & I didn’t feel it, but mine came out, they said it didn’t make any difference to my dry eyes anyway, this was about 14 years ago, I have ask to be referred back into Optometrists as feel that they maybe have something other than the Hylo night & cellovisc that I currently use. Good luck , I hope they work for you 😊

I find that the plug in one eye does help. Still need I lube and celluvisc drops. My ophthalmologist suggested cyclosporin drops but I found these painful.

I had a tear duct plug put in my right eye a few weeks ago, don't know it's there and no problems with it. Definite improvement. I use I-lube and celluvisc drops.

Hi Gramma3, I have a RA diagnosis. Take all my prescribed meds regularly and never miss but felt my symptoms could be improved upon. Did some research and found Hyaluronic acid supplementation really can help. With RA synovial membranes can be affected and hyaluronic acid supplementation helps to increase lubrication. I'd try these too for your condition. I buy good quality ones from Weightworld. They really make a difference and by enlarge my fingers feel quite normal again. It does take time though and you have to patient. On average kicks in around week 12, I was week 11 when I felt a difference. Good luck, hope it helps you too x

saw my ophthalmologist this year as eyes so dry and followed the regime of 4 times a day, a gentle eye massage ideally warm towel over eyes pre massage . Then used prescribed xailin plus at night and xailin normal for day. 3 months later so much better. He also recommended cod liver oil and when signed off told me to keep doing the massages and eye drops

Hi Gramma3.... my mum has very dry eyes and have had the plugs a few times as they don't last long and keep coming Out. She also couldn't tolerate contact lenses she said the plugs are fine you can't feel them. She needs a small operation now to help as the plugs keep coming out. Apparently its a common problem. Good luck it's worth a try.

I tried them without much success. They were annoying when looking to the side. I could always feel them. One fell out by itself about a month in. I dug the other out because it felt better without them. I spend a great deal of time with warm compresses on my eyes. Again no tears produced while wearing.
