Our next NRAS Exercise and Back to Sport meeting will be on Thursday 21st September at 7:30pm; where we will be joined by Peter Dutton who is Campaign Activation Manager of We Are Undefeatable.

“We Are Undefeatable” is a movement supporting people living with long term health conditions which encourages finding ways to be active that work for your health condition, not against it. Peter Dutton will be joining us to share some inspiring stories of people living with arthritis and how they move more, he will also share a range of campaign resources available, and how you can get involved in the campaign too.

This might not be the right place to post this, but why does everything have to do with sport. I hate sports. I don't watch them, I don't do them. My son hates sports even more. But everything seems to boil down to sport. Even putting the word sport in the title puts us off.

Are there other things that the NRAS does that doesn't have anything to do with sport?

Keep looking at the website they do have other things going on and they do post here 😊 it’s not just about sport it’s about getting moving which is important for us all.

Oh, I agree whole heartedly, moving is very important. It just frustrates me that movement = sport in so many people's mind.

When I was assessed by a private physio (clinical director of a university) she asked me what I did. I explained about the flock of chickens, the 55 metre drive we have to walk up and down to get the post, the gardening, pony sitting, housework, caring for my son. She said I was doing too much and needed to cut back.

The rheumatologist didn't bother actually checking with me what I do, and just suggested pilates! I asked her what in my very active life would she like me to stop doing in order to start doing that!

We really need to get away from sport being the only answer because it makes those of us that hate sport feel guilty for not doing it. This association makes it look like if you are in pain, and you are not doing sport, then it is your fault that you are in pain. When in fact there is far more helpful things that people could be doing.

For instance, wouldn't it be wonderful if instead of 'sport' people were sent a 'prescription' to work on the community allotments that produce fresh food for food banks? And yes, they don't exist, but maybe they should!

I didn’t read it as just sport though, that’s the difference. I hate sport too mainly because it’s something I could never do growing up with joint problems but this seems more exercise and getting back to doing what you used to do, whether that’s sports or another physical activity. If you’re very active already then maybe it’s not for you 😊

I agree - I always hated sport, especially team sports. But I always loved exercise - swimming, gymnastics, aerobics, Yoga and Pilates. Shame I can't do much of any of those these days!
