Mmm, ok. Maybe a better & more deep cleansing (internally) way would be for your GP to prescribe something like macrogol (Movicol)? Or your GP may have other suggestions to help, proper help I mean.

pauluk60 profile image

i have movicol and lactulose nomore doesn't always do job this is another tool !!!!1i think a lot of problems are made 10 times worse when your not going

Opiate based painkillers are notorious for constipating many people. I don’t suffer as I eat so much fruit and not much meat and lots of fluids/water so that works for me.

pauluk60 profile image
pauluk60 in reply to Neonkittie17

gone off fruit all to gatherer and its all coffee for me

Neonkittie17 profile image
Neonkittie17 in reply to pauluk60

Shame, as softer fruit is a great gentle way to ensure you don’t get constipated. Caffeinated coffee is well documented to stunt the stool schedule. Also if someone doesn’t do much in the way of exercise or movement then this has a huge effect on being constipated for many.

pauluk60 profile image

i agree but following the line easiest for me used to a lot of exercise always out fisherman rivers /canals/lakes

Being sedentary causes constipation though so it seems a vicious circle for you. 😑

What about breakfast cereal? It’s usually a way for many people to “go daily”.

I’m just not understanding some of your replies Paul on this, but think you mean you can’t eat things that would be normally good for your digestion such as fruit, but I do hope something works well for you and your problematic digestion. 🙏🏻

pauluk60 profile image
pauluk60 in reply to Neonkittie17

put gastroparesis in google neon and that will explain my problem with eating cant eat fruit raw skins get stuck start choking i use a whizzer to mash food so its easier to swallow i am at about stage two 3or 4 more serious 4 ia peg feeding think i am a long way from that but sometimes easier not to eat hope that explains it better for you generally speaking what you would say is good for your aint good for me

Neonkittie17 profile image
Neonkittie17 in reply to pauluk60

Sorry I didn’t add that a Ninja/blender is good to purée fruit or make drinks from it. I made my own apple juice as I don’t often eat apples as the skins are not always pleasant for me, but I drink the bought, pure, cloudy type. Not the sweetened clear type. I do know what your condition is but didn’t know you had it. Hope you can find something that helps. I was saying as others have to suggest how softer fruits and liquids help many people who are constipated. Good luck and hope you can sort something out. What’s right for me certainly isn’t right for anyone else. Same for us all but now and again we offer some tips re food and drink and what we’ve found good and we hope might help. As with anything medical, the experts are the people to ask and we aren’t those experts, but have some experience of our own which if dietary can be sometimes useful, but even innocent foods to some people are not all good for others, so one always needs to keep that in mind and the expert advice of doctors etc followed.

Neonkittie17 profile image

If it’s white bread it can cause constipation as it has less fibre and more starch and can cause delayed digestion.

neon you are right but i have been blest with gastroparesis and it alters the way i eat no motility in stomach and colon may be effected

I agree with you Paul, I have gastroparesis as well, we can’t eat healthy fruit and veg, salads, brown bread, I’m always getting told when I leave the skin from my baked potato, oh that’s the best part, er not for me it’s not, carrots I’m ok with them, my hubby hates carrots as well. Lactoluse was prescribed for me. I reach out for a coffee made with milk and that sets me running, …..🏃‍♀️

mash potato i have one those wizzers hand held thing does a good job worst thing with gastroparesis is nobodys ever heard of it and thats medical peeps as well liz have you tried coke when your made up it works a treat for me but it takes 4/6 cans to work use diet if you try it lot of sugar otherwise at moment keeping on top of it

Lizard28 profile image
Lizard28 in reply to pauluk60

mashed potato my favourite, I agree not many people have heard of gastroparesis, can’t drink any fizzy drinks I’m afraid, I do make a nice watery soup lol while everyone else has a nice lentil soup. I’m also allergic to loads of things, my diet is awful. I take domperidone but not sure if it’s helping.

pauluk60 profile image
pauluk60 in reply to Lizard28

yer i was on domperidone sounds great but did nowt liz i am on erythromycin and its working at the moment you may have to stop and start with it as body gets used to it but better than that other stuff specialist put me on it doc mite not b clued up on it

Lizard28 profile image
Lizard28 in reply to pauluk60

I was prescribed erythromycin at the start but it makes me so sick so I refused that one, hence the domperdone, not the best drug especially as I’m on hydroxy as well, not a good mix my GP said, they are doing ECGs to check on my heart.

I'm the same J. My GP prescribed macrogol when she first prescribed co-codamol but never needed it, all 3 boxes were returned to the pharmacy some time later. I have 3 types of fruit after lunch & that keeps me regular.

Neonkittie17 profile image
Neonkittie17 in reply to nomoreheels

Softer fruits, cereal and lots of fluid are the way for many! x

nomoreheels profile image
nomoreheels in reply to Neonkittie17

Yes, I agree. Right now it's apples (have 4 boxes to hopefully get through before they go over), plums & satsumas. Shreddies are guaranteed to help if I'm having trouble, which is fine by me, don't mind if I do! 😋

Gluten free cornflakes with blueberries and raspberries. I’ve just bought a lovelly black wire Next three tiered fruit bowl to add to my other large single one as we both do eat a lot of fruit but the berries and grapes are in the fridge of course. I’m off apples at the moment. x

medway-lady in reply to nomoreheels

No such thing as too much sugar ! xx A real treat, but I usually have golden syrup with my porridge. And today it was brekky out so eggs and bacon etc. I'm not addicted to sugar and have great teeth to prove it but the need to feed my sweet tooth does exist. xx

pauluk60 profile image

eggs and bacon that will me for 2 days egg s ok bacon multi chew

nomoreheels profile image
nomoreheels in reply to medway-lady

Don't get me wrong, & this may sound contradictory, I like sweet things but if there's an option I'd prefer to choose how sweet. Shreddies are quite a sweet cereal anyway so I just add a little to my taste. Plus I can have a slightly larger portion! I may be kidding myself of course!

medway-lady profile image

Love your logic ! lol xxxx

And I've a lot of apples from our trees, dual purpose so cook up into a lovely crumble and very pretty in the fruitbowl. Nothing like an English apple we've got Katy and Howgate Wonder. Foreign apples are just not so apple ?

nomoreheels profile image
nomoreheels in reply to medway-lady

I don’t know what ours are as they're inherited but are beautiful. We have a cooking apple one as well. Quite old trees & last years crop was rubbish, only enough for us & our next door neighbour really but this years has been outstanding. The first year we were here we put a couple of boxes on the front garden wall, a box of each, but didn’t last year. Obviously with such a good amount this year we've been able to & have been left a couple of messages saying thank you, they missed them last year! We've refilled them 3 times.

medway-lady profile image
medway-lady in reply to nomoreheels

We are not so far from Brogdale the national fruit collection which also has a lovely cafe ! so we visited to choose varieties not available in the shops and the labels are decorative that the only reason I know what they are. We took out some old fruit trees which were no longer productive and I love the blossom too. Nothing like really fresh apple in the Autumn. xx

nomoreheels profile image
nomoreheels in reply to medway-lady

Ah blossom. February was one of my favourite months as we had lots of almond trees & the smell, plus the amount of bees that released the smell even more, was just heaven. I've seenBrogdale on Gardener's World before & have said if we find ourselves down that part of the world we'd go.

medway-lady profile image
medway-lady in reply to nomoreheels

They grow to order so we ordered in July got in January as had to be planted late winter. Really helpful and they do orchard walk too. Other place to go is Wisley where you can also walk the orchards. Bottom of my road we've hundreds of pear trees in 3 orchards. Comice and Conferenace both lovely. So we didn't plant pear trees ! lol xx

nomoreheels profile image
nomoreheels in reply to medway-lady

My h keeps mentioning Wisley, it's just the distance. I suppose we could do the 2 if we went over a few days, 4 or so. Might just see what else would be of interest down that way & make a week of it, maybe staying in an English Heritage place.

In Cambodia we use butt hoses, which is a hose that sits beside the toilet for washing ourselves as most Cambodians think toilet roll is very unhygienic. They work really well.

I have a glass of prune juice every morning and fresh fruit mid morning since starting on Co-codomol and naproxen. Also avoid white bread. Still have the odd day blocked up and this does affect my lower pain. Black strong coffee sometimes gets me moving.

I find a daily portion of Prunes help. You can buy them tinned in syrup/juice or the softened ones in a bag that I prefer. If you don’t cope well with fruit skins the latter might suit you.

Have you tried licorice? That might help too.

Good luck.

Neonkittie17 profile image
Neonkittie17 in reply to Lolabridge

Good point re some licorice. My Mum used to give that to my brother and I when we were young as she didn’t like to use any laxatives. We thought it was great getting licorice and it was gentle on you as well. (I love a Panda licorice bar occasionally.!)

nomoreheels profile image
nomoreheels in reply to Neonkittie17

Joris Belgian Rounds, yuuummy, but you do need to limit daily intake! I can remember sharing Pontefact cakes with one of our dogs not thinking of the effect! Certainly cleared her our, poor thing. 🫢

Neonkittie17 profile image
Neonkittie17 in reply to nomoreheels

I love the taste of licorice but I’ve not had Joris, but have had similar salted in Salmiakki (Finnish) and I love anything Lakrids (Danish). I usually get my OH a big selection box of theirs at Christmas. (They come with cute mini black tongs to select them with!) Some of the Lakrids flavours are quite exotic for licorice and you think that’s a bit weird sounding, but they work! The balance is delicate and subtle. We get a tub of their natural licorice too. They are super quality.

Although I love the taste, I am no addict/regular consumer and aware of the strong black licorice affecting some people re arrhythmia and BP, but generally you’d need be a daily consumer of >2 oz apparently to get those side effects. What we get lasts for many months and I my OH eats the majority, but an occasional piece of mango or chocolate covered licorice is very nice! (I’m not sure how licorice affects dogs, apart from the obvious! 😳)

We know a guy (sadly lacking in dietary knowledge of any sort!) who lives next to a small petrol station with a late shop attached. He often tells us of going to get “a bag of Spanish” as he calls it from there most evenings to watch TV with! (We wonder if he gets a pack of 🧻🧻🧻🧻 whilst he’s there?!) This guy has the constitution of a goat so I think he won’t be affected and it will be Haribo/less potent lictoce they sell so not as strong. 😱x

nomoreheels profile image
nomoreheels in reply to Neonkittie17

I don't like salted licorice, or not the ones I bought by mistake. It had an ammonia sort of flavour, those went back & exchanged for the ones I actually wanted! Must look those 2 makes up. Always happy to find a new licorice. Mum always had the really hard licorice, break-with-a-hammer type hard, looked like a lump of jet. Not been able to find that yet.

Neonkittie17 profile image
Neonkittie17 in reply to nomoreheels

I used to work in a chemist early teens as a Saturday job mid 1970s and we sold small rock hard cylindrical licorice sticks which were sealed in cellophane and around 4ins in length and quite slim. That was verg glossy and hard like jet. They were a very strong flavour and brittle. We also sold licorice twigs too. Although Pontefract isn’t too far away we’ve never been to the licorice cafe yet but maybe one day soon!

nomoreheels profile image
nomoreheels in reply to Neonkittie17

I’ve got one of those in a drawer, Aurelio Menozzi, an Italian licorice. I prefer it a little sweeter, it is a stronger flavour as you say. I love licorice root. We used to buy a bundle off a street vendor man near El Corte Inglés in Alicante, lovely. Is the licorice cafe still open? I’d heard it had shut.

Neonkittie17 profile image
Neonkittie17 in reply to nomoreheels

it was open last year but I don’t know as I’m not going out in cafes etc at the mo. I don’t like the overly sweet licorices. Those little twigs were lovely to chew!

hi Paul. Is that a boxer dog on your profile picture? We’ve got an 18 month old girl, Evie . The 4th boxer we’ve owned. Anyway, back to your issues. Not sure if you can get it in the UK but in Australia we have tinned pure pear juice. It’s very sweet but a whole tin of that (a big tin.it would be about 800grams maybe) works wonders.

poor you! I find grapefruit v helpful, a small glass each morning. Started this aftr hospital in Tenerife in May, with coconut water, to boost my electrolytes BUT DO NOT TAKE GFRUIT IF HIGH BP OR ON STATINS; CHECK WITH YOUR PHARMACIST. Loo beside bath is ideal 4me to wash my hair too. THo' can't manage baths any more just showers. My homemade wheaten bread sorts out any poo probs..
