My partner has a tumor

Carolsos profile image

Just found out my partner has a tumor mass on his kidney! Am deverstated. He cannot believe it, he has been unwell as in losing weight and night sweats and now peeing blood, very upsetting for him. We are seeing the consultant on Tuesday and we hopefully will learn a lot more, eg how big it is, what stage it's at and what are they going to do? I rang my work and explained what is happening and am pleased to say I can have time off to go with him on Tuesday. Thanks for listening guys. Take care everyone.

What a shock! But there’s a good chance that it is one that can be operated on easily and then all will be well. I have two neighbours who discovered they had tumours, both are not totally fine.

I have my fingers crossed for you both.

Horrible thing to face but hopefully all will be fine. A friend had a similar thing and had the tumour removed ( kept the kidney) and was absolutely fine afterwards so hopefully the same will happen in this case.

I can understand what a shock it must be for you both. My son’s mother in law had the same thing over 10yrs ago , had it removed and has been fine ever since. I really hope this helps.

I'm so sorry, what a stressful bit of news. I know there's no point telling you not to worry because it's natural and you will need a lot of support whatever the outcome of your appointment.

But in case it can offer small comfort, my father had kidney cancer not long ago, same symptoms. He is now doing absolutely fine and surgery got it all. I know it won't affect what you go through, but at the time similar stories from others helped reassure me.

Sending lots of love. I'm so glad you get to go with him, it's really important. x

First of all try not to worry kidney function is an overall measurement and think how many lead normal lives after transplants and only have 1 kidney. Peeing blood is alarming but one drop can turn a bucket of water pink ! Having kidney problems is not fun believe me but it is not always a malignant tumour, I know of one person who at my group who has several tumours that caused her kidney to be removed and she lives an active normal life. Nephrologists are usually really nice and I never met one without a sense of humour although as my husband said they only deal with people who are genuinely sick so don't see the malingerers with nothing better to do than imagine illness. I'm under the Kent and Canterbury Renal Hospital and they give everyone a hot line number to call if unwell or to check a new medication with. The can be a problem as twice one by RA consultant a medication was prescribed that l checked to get a call back " don't take this we've spoken to RA and its not allowed for kidney patients" and once by GP as low function means a lot of drugs filtered by the kidney need to have a dosage reduction or may not be used. Having said that it's not been a problem.I'd just finally add he should check with Nephrology first then drink lot of water to flush out toxins and check his diet to make sure he doesn't eat some things but the renal dietician will help out if he needs to do that. In my experience renal issues are treated really well and as he's probably tired he should be careful to get enough sleep and also the weakness might mean a grab rail in the shower or bath. Amazon do a really good suction one so no horrid obvious signs of a problem in the bathroom. Honestly it might not be nearly as bad as you think it might be and so best of luck and let us know how he gets on. I have a GFR (functionalists of both kidneys of 22/26 but that is not as good and far more dangerous than a person with one kidney and a GFR of 60, Stay positive and again try not to worry.xx

My cousin also had the same and is still seen every six months but she is okay now and just getting on with her life. I hope you get good news from the consultant.

I know every case different but my Mum in June was told large mass and she had removal in Oct and she was out and about and being a busy bee very quickly after. She is in better shape than me right now. Big hugs and so glad to hear you can go too x

So sorry to read this, hope the appointment later this week will bring some clarity. Big hugs, its such a shock x

I had this recently with my dad. It’s very upsetting and stressful. His luckily is small and slow growing, so they are going to monitor. Too invasive for him to have surgery as he has other stuff going on. He’s fine. It’s the worry more than anything. Hope things are clearer on Tuesday x
