Cellulitis

Hi. I had a outpatient appointment at the hospital and the doctor noticed I had cellulitis in my leg. She gave me antibiotics for 10 days, flucloxacillin, 8 a day. It wasn't getting better. So went to A and E last Wednesday. The doctor said it didn't look to bad and gave me cream for the itching. It's got worse, going round my leg now. I feel fine, just tired. Don't know what to do.

I've been to out of hours doctors today and they said it's not even hot and it's staining of the skin. No antibiotics because it's not hot.

This is it really,I feel fine.

I’d get an ‘emergency appointment’ at your GP tomorrow. If those antibiotics aren’t working they should try you on another. Try and get a F2F if possible, as they need to see it really.

Agree with the others, don’t think it is something you should just accept and put up with. Just done a spot of Googling, first site said

‘ Cellulitis treatment usually includes a prescription oral antibiotic. Within three days of starting an antibiotic, let your doctor know whether the infection is responding to treatment. You'll need to take the antibiotic for as long as your doctor directs, usually five to 10 days but possibly as long as 14 days.’

The NHS says it may get worse in the first 48 hours of treatment but should start to improve. You are way past the 48 hours. So time to make a lot of noise. Good luck with it.

Ok thank you. They just don't seem to help when I go back. I went to A and E and thought they might of kept me in but he said it looked ok.

Definitely go back. You might need another course. I have had it twice, as I’m allergic to bites. My GP is quite good at giving me antibiotics, she also gives me an antibiotic cream.xx

Hi, don’t let it get out of hand it can quite easily turn to sepsis. If you get a sore throat or temperature get straight back to doctor or ideally hospital. I had this about 5 years ago and was very poorly in the end. I don’t want to scare you but I would keep a very close eye on yourself. Hopefully you’re on the mend, take care x

Hi Susies. I’ve had it twice in 6months. Both times I needed antibiotics for 2weeks. It didn’t clear up with just one weeks worth. I phoned the doctor to tell him and requested another weeks worth which they gave me. I still have problems with my leg bottom of the calf. It gets hot and sore now and again but it’s not painful. Hope this helps hun. Take care 🤗🤗

My husband was diagnosed similarly. Meds didn’t help. Second opinion revealed Erysipelas, normally caused by break in skin. Meds for this cured him. Hope that helps. Sandra

Thank you Sandra. I seen out of hours doctor yesterday and he said no infection because it wasn't even warm when I went there and because I got bad veins, sink staining 🤔 I give up .

SusieAsk to see a specialist. We’re all entitled to a second opinion.

Good luck. An illness which refuses to disappear is very wearing.

It drags you down physically and mentally.

Doctors are exhausted with Covid but they still wish to help people.

HI, A long story but a warning that it should be taken very seriously in my experience. A couple of years ago I felt very unwell for a couple of days then icy back and shaking hands. I thought it was flu at first and was about to go to bed for the weekend but then realised that I needed to see a Doctor. Great GP saw me at 7pm on friday, heart racing ,temp through the roof. He noticed cellulitis on my leg,I wasn’t aware of it. Shipped me out A&E and I had sepsis.Five nights on IV antibiotics. When I got home I found notes that I had been making through the night of my temp.I did not remember doing it. The cellulitis came back almost a year later and I recognised it and this time it was just one night in hospital and going back for IV in the daytime. If I had ignored it and gone to bed….
