Sciatica and numbness

Hi everyone around 5 months ago I had a really bad bout of sciatica in my leg from top to bottom. Any how I got up one morning and it had completely disappeared but a new symptom had been left in its place from the top of my knee to the tip of my toes in my right leg I have absolutely no feeling whatsoever my doctor referred me to see a neurologist who then organised for me to go and have an EMG test at the hallamshire hospital sheffield and it turns out that the sciatica has somehow damaged all the nerves in the lower part of my leg. So for some reason the nerves are not firing off in that part of my leg has anyone else had the same symptoms or something similar

I haven’t had sciatica but I did have a lot ankle problems for a very long time (3years) I have had physio and new orthotics that help but podiatrist noticed on some tests that I wasn’t aware of feeling on the front and side of my foot . Rheumatologist has referred me to a neurologist diagnosed at the same time with fibromyalgia so I got a quick appointment in July.

I lost sensation in the front of my thighs a while ago due to trapped nerves, but thankfully it returned eventually.....It was a very odd sensation. Hope yours gets sorted soon.

Yes I’ve have had slipped discs and sciatica and lost most of the feeling in the front of one thigh. It hasn’t gone away for me so there was lasting damage there.

Yes its weird I know and not very nice but the hospital has reassured me that I have a very good blood supply and strong pulse in my leg and foot 😬😬

I had something very similar last year. I started to limp when I walked and my left foot feels numb on the outside of sole. Had physio appointment gave me exercises to do but haven’t helped. Can still walk with occasional limp but still little feeling on outside of left foot. Just putting up with it at the moment.

Have you had an mri scan?

Had both cat scan and mri scan they found damage to 3 vertebrae in bottom of my back but still can't figure out what's happening in my lower right leg

That’s worrying. Have you looked into Corda Equina, sometimes missed

Could you please explain what Corda Equina is never heard of it please excuse my ignorance on this thank you 😇😇

Difficult to explain probably easier if you google it. It’s basically when the nerve endings in the lower back are compressed. Which will cause severe numbness & other delightful symptoms. It’s very rare so therefore often missed.

It was just a thought.

got to bulging disks in my spine trapping the sciatic nerve and left leg completely useless it has left me with what's called FND also excruciating pain in my lower back im waiting to see if a nuro surgeon will operate as I've heart disease as well as fibro. and other issues .

in reply toproffesor1

FND and Fibro wouldn’t explain or be caused by nerve entrapment - they are conversion disorders (ie brain not converting peripheral signals correctly) as opposed to something with a biomedical cause such as bulging discs. I’d be extremely wary about acquiring these functional labels (in US FND is viewed as a core psychiatric disorder) if you have evidenced herniated discs and inflammatory arthritis.

Cauda Equina and other potentiality serious problems can easily get missed by doctors making assumptions that it’s all functional pain and loss of sedation - when it isn’t.
