Hello,

Does anyone know of any good supplements I could take alongside the usual medication please ?

I’m currently on Benepali which was working really well for me but for the last 8 months I’m struggling with swollen painful feet , I’ve read that turmeric is really good but due to long term anti inflammatory pain killers my stomach is a little bit sensitive.

Thank you for reading any ideas would be gratefully appreciated.

I’d speak to your doctors about taking any supplements to check they’re alright for you to take, we can’t advise on what you can take. It would be a good idea to talk to them anyway if your feet are flaring as they need to know your meds aren’t controlling your RA 😊

Thank you for the reply , I have a telephone appointment in Feb with my rheumatologist but it’s not the same as being seen properly fingers crossed it settles down quickly.

Hi Sue I take magnesium (I get a lot of cramps and need more than a banana which I have most days anyway) Vit D taken since been diagnosed, Vit K Vit B12 and cod liver oil. Tumeric with no black pepper. My RA team know what I take but not bothered unless there is an interaction with anything else you take meds wise. Worth checking at a pharmacy for instance.

BIG question is do I see a difference.........not too sure but prefer to keep them in then find out the hard way and have t restart.

I take FutureYou magnesium and my husband swears by their turmeric. I tried that but it upset my stomach for some reason. Future You are good in that you can try their stuff for one month for the cost of postage and if you don’t like them or don’t get on you just cancel. I tKe similar supplements to Deeb, I take D3, K2- Mk 7, omega 3 Algae oil, magnesium, a little bit if calcium citrate to boost my dietary intake basically vitamins and minerals that relate to bone building. I also do regular home blood tests to make sure I’m not overdosing anything.

I’d check with your doctor or pharmacy to make sure that nothing clashes with any prescribed drugs though.

If its feet I'd suggest you see GP s it might be fluid retention. Just a thought but its not just about the Benepali its if you take other medications too. I have B12 injections and Ad Cal for D. I'd urge you to talk to GP again as it can be bad to take too much or taking might mask the fact that it could be a medical need to the Vitamin prescribed in a controlled dose.

Thank you for the reply I’m taking naproxen, paracetamol, lansoprazole and amitriptyline on top of Benepali. My diet isn’t good and it’s interesting to hear what others take as in supplements.

Hi Susan,

I'm taking mostly what has been mentioned. Turmeric, Vit D, Vit K, Vit B12, Thymus supplements. You're probably thinking thymus? I thought the same thing when someone had recommended it to me. I had to do some research myself. In short Thymus is your control center, and the supplements help calms it. It may be different for everyone so please research and check with your doctor.

Hi. Check with your Rhumy nurse first. I take Curcumin (contains turmeric) this type works well with me. It’s the only turmeric that does work. ( Cramps and stiffness. ) Vitamin D and garlic I have taken for years, gentle exercise is a must. It took me 18 months to be able to do this, but it certainly helps.Keep safe

Once you are on any medication you should always speak to your rheumy nurse before you add any supplements. If your doctor thought you needed any he would prescribe them for you.

A lot of supplements can cause your prescribed meds to either not work....or

cause more unnecessary symptoms.

People think herbal supplements must be fine because they are “Natural”.

Please believe that is not true....talk to your nurse.

I was always told to ck with you Doctor before taking any supplements. They may interfere with your meds. Or ask if he knows of any he would advise.
