Vaccinations

I was told by my rheumatology nurse today, after she had enquired if I had heard anything yet, that I can have the Pfizer vaccine but NOT the Oxford one as that is live. She pointed out that with so many volunteers being trained to do the vaccinations, it is important that we ask before we get it

just thought I would pass it on

I was told about the Pfizer one but I was under the impression that the Oxford one wasn't live either. She didn't tell me but I don't know where I got it from. Knowing me I got it wrong. She has told me not to have any without checking with rheumatology first .

So was I? The oxford is a traditional type vaccine, which can be live or not live, and I thought it was not live... I was sort of favouring the oxford one as it is using well known approaches. Not that I’m likely to be asked for a choice!

But yes I will check everything once I get to the point of having so eone head towards me with a needle...!

Let's hope it's not live then. Tbh I saw mine 2 weeks ago when she said they didn't know anything at that time and Pat saw hers today so more info is available. I would definitely believe a rheum nurse. Thank you for the info Pat.

Me too I thought Oxford was not live.

She is right about the Oxford vaccine.

I might wait for the Imperial College vaccine as it is being tested better, rather than risking the unknown long term effects of vaccines approved and being given now.

The Oxford vaccine is NOT a live vaccine....the nurse who told you that has got her information muddled.

The Oxford vaccine is a similar vaccine to the influenza vaccine but the Influenza antigens are replaced by Covid 19 antigens.

Unless I have missed something the Oxford vaccine has not yet been licensed for use .....so it’s sort of academic whether it is alive or dead as it will not be offered to anyone until it is licensed.

Thank you, AC. I had been under the impression it was not live, therefore, suitable for people on immune suppressing drugs.

Correct. The Oxford vaccine is safe but you are right it hasn't been signed off yet. I got it wrong last week. I read that it was safe and I confused that with being ok to use. Should be very soon.

Sheila_G there’s been so much conflicting information in the media and from health care professionals, so it’s no wonder we get confused!

I do wish we could be given correct and definitive advice by the British Rheumatology Society!!

Her information is incorrect. You can research this. Pfizer, moderna and Oxford astra Monica are NOT live vaccines. The pfizer is passed and being used. The moderna is passed and waiting on permission for europe to start being used.

Oxford astra zenica has been investigated and is the only one to be passed further by peer review which is very rigorous. So its hopeful our regulators will pass it next week.

That is very true. I have never had flu vaccine but the Covid thing made me change my mind. My GP arranged it for me and my husband. Sadly we have both been given wrong vaccine for our age. Hopefully we won't have to have another one.

Thank you everyone for replying. I wonder where she got it from? I think the main point is simply to check no vaccination is live before we allow it

With so much conflicting advice as to whether or not the Oxford/Zeneca vaccine is"live" or not I'm not too keen to leave it to ask at the time of injection. We currently do not know who will be doing the vaccination and what medical knowledge they have. Hopefully this confusion will be cleared up once it is finally available to be used.
