So I cant walk due to pain like a nerve or something catching on the inside if my left knee and underneath.
Been like it three days. Called rheumy but hes been on holiday and " might see it" tomorrow.
So I wondered ....do I just not walk on it and wait. If he doesn't call ? I dont want to go to a and e as they will say , ...rheumatology probably ..as they always do. In this case it doesnt " feel" like that and I dont want to sit in the waiting room.
Gp know nothing about knees so argh ....

Oh poor you... 3 days!!! Boy that’s tough. My Rheumatologist would just refer me and there I sit on a waiting list. If it was me it would be A&E. You can tell them he’s on holiday and you need help now.. you never know.
Ouch, Can you alleviate it with rest, elevation and icing? I know this sounds silly, but I get nerve pain in me "new" knee and just very light movement (lying down) several time an hour very often helps even though it hurts at the time. I the ice for 20 minutes.
I suppose if nothing helps A&E is the best of all evils. Good luck.
Hi thanks for the reply . I've done elevation and ice and painkillers but I tried a bandage which was so painful. The worst pain was last night when I laid in bed and tried to straighten the leg fully and trying to go upstairs... just annoying when I've felt do well. Maybe I've overdone it trying to keep going during lockdown .
Yes but it's been 3 days and they want 24 hrs. Also my hospital is in a high covId area and I've heard tales of the waiting room not really social distancing well. So that puts me off..
I felt a bit anxious going to the hospital today knowing I was going to be there a while. but like you had to balance in my mind it was better to go now than cancel and leave it any longer. I really hope it settles and that your rheumy calls too.
Strangely I'm not concerned about my monthly blood then monthly infusion at the rheumy department cause I caused merry hell at the hospital when there was no infection control or signage, however they listened and that got put in place and I felt safe. I've just heard bad reports about a and e being over busy.
Hi allanah. A&E if you want it sorted quickly, if you leave it too long you could risk damage occuring. They may X-ray it to find out what's causing the problem. How did it happen?
Problem with that is whilst walking on big pebbles, you can go over on your foot and not really notice particularly if you're chatting along with someone, so if you did that, it might have jerked your knee without immediate reaction - if you get what I'm trying to say!!!
Oh goodness so sorry to read you are in such pain; It seems like you've exhausted all your regular options of getting help. Do you think it would be worth ringing 111 for help or is it beyond that ?
Like other posters, I would probably recommend A&E (if you can face it), should your Rheumatologis not contact you. I think it's appropriate too as your pain came on following walking on pebbles, so I imagine there is a chance it could be something that's happened "accidentally?" Also, it doesn't feel like your usual rheumatoid pain by the sounds of it. Regarding the 3 day delay, you have waited to see if it settled down first, but it hasn't. Seems very reasonable. I've had to do something similar a few times with repeated stress fractures.
One more thought, would there be any chance of trying to phone A&E before you go to check how busy it might be? Don't know if that's possible, the idea just popped into my head!
How about an osteo? I might even be able to ask someone to speak to you as you’re in Yorkshire I think. Osteo sand physios are my client base as I have a few in Yorkshire. I’d suggest osteo rather than a physio.
It sounds to me like you’ve damaged your ligament. I managed to tear mine with a small stumble but my knees had been in a bad way for quite some time which is why it gave way. Unfortunately it took six weeks to heal and required a full leg brace fitted by A&E and after about two weeks of wearing that I had to start physio which was fun as I still wasn’t able to weight bare. Hey ho fixed it but if it’s badly damaged you could need surgery. Not trying to scare you but do yourself a favour and get it checked out you’ll be glad you did I’m afraid a trip to A&E is probably warranted might be a plan to see if you can get a pre-booked appointment because in our area they do an urgent care centre within the A&E department a bit like an out of hours service but for people who need stitches and x-rays etc so would be better than sitting in a department for hours. My problem was that I couldn’t straighten my knee without screaming the place down and couldn’t stand up and put any weight on it too so sounds similar to your issue check out ACL and see if your symptoms fit.
If you’ve torn your ACL then you’re going to need an X-ray or better still a scan but good luck with that. If you’re having issues with getting advice over the phone get in the car and go down there. 111 in my experience is a waste of time you might never get a call back from them ever and they won’t give advice over the phone either. I’d cut my losses and find out from a visit to A&E what the damage is. It’s a shame your GP can’t arrange an appointment in A&E for you I’m sure they could manage to get you in pretty quick with just one phone call. Most people me included feel that they don’t want to be a bother on emergency services but if you can’t walk and you’re in lots of pain it’s not going to go away by itself or it’s very unlikely to.
I hope your knee continued to be stable now 💗 I had damaged inner knee ligaments but they were a really obvious pulling pain. Well even more so as the guy who did it put his full force on my knee!! I had to swing between two sticks for weeks but I didn’t need a realignment op. My physio managed to strengthen it all with non weight bearing exercises and hands on massage and gentle manipulation. x
Yeah I got away with a leg brace which was very difficult and bought myself a frame coz my hands wouldn’t cope with crutches or sticks. Physio tension band exercises helped but seemed to take ages I have lots of issues and soreness when my R.A. is bad so have to really watch it. Still don’t know to this day how I managed to do it coz it was a nothing stumble just had enough of the inflammation I think. Still do exercises through gritted teeth when it’s very sore. But then again I broke my collarbone picking up a coffee when I had a frozen shoulder so par for the course lol.
I know the feeling. I get this regularly ever since I dislocated my knee as a kid. Its super painful. I can get mine sorted myself but if was you I would defo go to a&e. You might need your knee re-allining.
I had something similar when an orthotist damaged my inner knee ligaments (MCL) and did something to a nerve too. I felt the damage though very much when he pressed down on it.😑 Was swinging between two walking sticks for months with a damaged ligament. I don’t think this sounds like what you have though. Sounds more acute. Might you have twisted it recently or carried something heavy putting pressure on it? .. and not thought anything of it? .. although if it was a tear you’d feel that. It sounds like when the knee gets swollen with RA and your nerves get pressed on as I have that with the Baker cyst at the mo but not stopping me moving but telling me it wants a steroid shot bur not allowed one at the mo. Have you a BC behind your knee still which may be referring pain further round? Hope you can get some relief. x
Oh goodness me what a nightmare with this ongoing saga. Why can’t people do what they say? It drives me mad hearing please do call your GP, health care teams etc as the NHS is still open. 🤷♀️. I really do hope a call comes tomorrow. It will be like buses and all three will come at the same time. 🙄 x
So call backs dudnt happen so after 11 hrs of waiting I recalled 111. I told them I've waited all day for a call back ...we dont have your call .... grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr😱 so they put me onto a doctor who said go to a and e ...I said I could have done that today !! Anyway a and e tomorrow morning for xray and check ......
Here is hoping all goes much smoother on your visit to A&E tomorrow and you get some answers. Honestly I know we need patience but navigating the health care system is like a game of the Crystal maze! 🙈
Yes I understand covid and busy etc. But this is just ridiculous!but I dud sit on it 3 days as I know they would say ice rest elevate it or its RA!! So if they say that tomorrow I may scream lol 🤯
It’s sure taken a lot of time and ringing around must have drove you mad 😡. Hope you get some answers tomorrow after being messed about. Keep us posted what they say. If it’s any consolation I rang rheumy nurse helpline yesterday and they’ve got me an urgent appointment for Friday next week or so I thought but consultant secretary rang me today and said there’s no sign of any appointment that’s been booked for me. Hoping that it’s just that the booking office haven’t got around to it yet so it’s not on the system. I was hoping to get some help and at least a way forward with new biologic but not sure it’s going to happen. No appointments with consultant whatsoever at least 3-6 months according to his secretary 🤬🤬 any ideas where I go from here ? lol looks like I’ve probably got another six months without medication. I wouldn’t mind but it’s such a risk for me to go to the hospital as I’m extremely vulnerable my husband will do his nut but I haven’t had the courage to tell him yet think I will butter him up with a nice coffee and biscuit and bite the bullet tomorrow.
Very true my consultant is on annual leave too and I really need to see him and not the nurses because as good as they are they don’t know my situation as far as my zero immune system is concerned so would need immunology’s input too. I blooming well give up. Really hope you get sorted out tomorrow and they do something to help because three days with your knee being like that must be hell. Even if it’s a steroid shot or just a short term brace or strapping and a follow up with physio. You’re definitely doing the right thing going to A&E. Good luck 🤞
Its soft tissue injury with inflammatory response. Maybe ligament tear so if it's still sore in 2 weeks go to gp. Home and rest . What a waste of everyone s time 😭
No no no.. we are not medics so don’t feel stupid. It doesn’t help that we have a disease that the medics don’t understand never mind us. What would be stupid would be to leave it. Your in pain for days it didn’t feel right what if it was more serious.Getting help was the right thing to do. I’m glad it’s not has bad as you thought x
I don’t think it’s a waste of time at all, it could easily have been something else which required more prompt action. Compared to some of the things which you hear stories of people turning up to A and E with it was very serious indeed! And you had spent two days trying to get medical attention from anywhere else but A and E....
Oh no, I’m sorry to hear that. Did they do any x-rays or scans at all? Us RD people are used to dealing with pain so if you are in agony then it must be bad. Hope you can get some sleep xx
I tore a number of ligaments in my foot several years ago, and it was very painful. Did they give you crutches to use or anything to protect your knee in the meantime ? It was only after several months of my foot not healing properly that I was told it should probably have been in a boot!
Nope they heard Ra and I heard the nurse say oh shes got RA in her knee. I asked her to come into the room and explained RA is systemic and often symmetrical and your leg doesnt normally give way. But as they are professional I then left it ....
Oh that’s pants for you Allanah sounds like you weren’t treated properly at all 🤬. If you’re still in lots of pain after the weekend please go back and see someone else a ligament tear needs treatment not ignoring. You definitely did the right thing going to A&E and you weren’t wasting anyone’s time. Blooming labels they give you when you have an autoimmune disease they should have scanned it or X-ray’d it at the flipping minimum. Very shoddy don’t leave it even if you only see your GP on Monday they can refer you to someone who will check it out properly not just ignore it as a symptom of R.A. in the knee. It took nothing for me to crack a collarbone lifting a coffee coz of an ignored frozen shoulder and a small stumble tore my ACL so it’s not just because you have R.A. in your knee that you’re feeling so much pain there’s quite obviously something else going on.
