Best cordless hoovers for feeble wrists?

Successfully moved house, and have even managed to get my meds with only a 2 week delay!

The new house has wood and tile floors downstairs and our existing vacuum cleaner just clamps down onto the surface when I try to use it, making it impossible for me to move it around. My spouse, lovely in many ways, is just not as motivated as I am to keep the floors anything approaching clean.

So, I think I need a new hoover. But I'm having difficulty wading through the reviews of the cordless cleaners to find if you have to constantly squeeze the trigger to get it to power, or if it's easy to move on hard and carpeted floors if you've got the upper limb strength of the average nonagenarian.

Has anyone got any advice or tips? Thanks!

Just bought a beldray last week and it's great

We have an upright GTech vacuum cleaner. Battery powered with a good run time it is very light weight and saves you having to plug in and unplug all the time. Conversely, using a damp mop might work very well?

12Chrissy34 in reply to Gnarli

I use a flash speedmop because I can't reliably lift a mop bucket in and out of the sink or up and down the stairs - it kind of clumps the hair and dust into little lumps but doesn't pick it up

Ok. I do sweep the floor first though

Gtech is good my Sebo is too heavy to take upstairs so we bought a Tech direct and it came with a separate hand held one. Both are really good.

I have tried 3 cordless vacuums, overall the breach has my vote too, it's light weight, with a reasonable run time and picks up well in our carpets, wooden floors and cushion floor in the kitchen and bathroom.

Sounds good! What's Breach? A make?

rounder profile image

Sorry, autocorrect 😂 it did say G Tech!!!!! There's a push button to switch it on and off so no trigger to hold down as you hoover.....I have rubbish hands and wrists so that's a problem for me with previous makes. It's relatively simple to empty too......the only problem I find is hair getting wrapped around the roller, we have a rather shaggy little dog who deposits fur indiscriminately, but she's beautifully scruffy, faithful and the reason to go for a walk every day which is good for me, (she was so good for my well being while shielding too).

nomoreheels in reply to rounder

Do you realise you detach the brush roller to clean it properly? Just wondered in case you weren’t aware. My h has to get it out for me because I don't have the strength in my fingers/thumbs to push the button. That is if you have the Mk2. If you have a Mk1 it's a little more fiddly as you have to take out a couple of screws to take the end piece off.

rounder in reply to nomoreheels

Thanks, don't think I knew that, will check it, but guessing hubby may need to do it. I find a fine crochet hook really useful for getting hairs from round the roller.

That's handy. With my hair being longer than shoulder length at the mo my hair gets caught round the roller but I use a quick unpick (or seam ripper).

I’d go to a shop that has lots you can try out. This is what I do if I need electrical items, you can test the weight and have a go of them. I’ve got a cordless Dyson which is good and easy to move around but hard to say if it’ll suit you as you do have to hold the trigger.

I’ve a Dyson V8 which I’ve had for 4 years and it’s very light. I have weak wrists and can manage this perfectly taking it upstairs too slowly of course! I’ll get another one when it’s time but mine shows no sign of wearing out at the mo and also I looked at GTech which have longer power/running time. The Dysons do require some TLC and cleaning out regularly, but it’s lovely to be cordless and light!

I have three G Techs...they are light as a feather ...I originally had two...one up/one down....then they brought out one that you can take the handle completely off & just use it flat to do stairs....& the reason I bought it....the car seats.

You turn it on by pressing your foot on the side...very easy...doesn’t take much pressure.

But of course it will only pick up dust/dirt...for the tiles you will need something that washes...I have one that has two circular pads...battery charged & it’s great...if I can find the name I’ll post it later...but item 808048 on QVC is cheap & cheerful & looks as if it might do the job

Found the instruction book!

The mop I have is a Cordless Rechargeable Dual Rotating Heads Hover Mop.

It’s made in the US & I bought it from QVC for about £25.

The website is customercare@hovermop.com

Phone info 0203 617 1773

There are similar on Amazon for around the same price...as it says is has two circular discs with Velcro on pads.

My mum has a gtech and it’s super life he C and glides along the floor . But my best investment was a roomba robot that vacuums my entire ground floor on its own . The Best Buy I ever made as I’ve had it for five years .

sivas profile image
sivas in reply to LinaM

I just bought a roomba upon a friend’s recommendation. I’ve only used it this past week and happy so far. I also bought the mop and used it once only. It’s worth a thought.

My Gtech is great. Had one when they first came out & upgraded to the Mk2, both K9's as we have dogs. For tiled floors we can't fault the Vax Glide ONEPWR. Our kitchen floor has non slip tiles which just shredded traditional mops, which my h preferred until it he found it took too much effort. We've had the Vax about 4 months now & still happy with it.

I hope you have many happy years in your new home.

CagneysMum profile image
CagneysMum in reply to nomoreheels

Hi. Does the vax leave the floor dry because we have a steam mop that cleans well but leaves the floor very wet!

nomoreheels profile image
nomoreheels in reply to CagneysMum

Yes, well not as you use the Vax but fully dry within a couple of minutes. You could walk on it immediately after if you wanted if that helps. We were impressed especially with having dogs & used to needing to keep them off the newly cleaned floor when he used to mop it. It also vacuums immediately before it washes but again with having dogs we vacuum it before washing it, just because we like to really. It was a bit of a punt because we didn’t know anyone who had one & it's not the cheapest but we've been really happy with it.

... watching - I cannot find any cordless vacuum which doesn't add excess weight/load to wrists etc.

nomoreheels profile image
nomoreheels in reply to BoneyC

The Gtech AirRam Mk2 is only 3 kilos, easy to carry upstairs particularly when the handle is down.

medway-lady profile image
medway-lady in reply to nomoreheels

Thats true and good value too.

BoneyC profile image
BoneyC in reply to nomoreheels

... thanks. Read some of the reviews on Argos and it does seem like a good option. Currently have 2 Dysons - one far too big and heavy to pull around and the other is a much smaller/lighter DC49 which they stopped making. Will definitely check the GTech out next time I am in Currys or John Lewis.

nomoreheels profile image
nomoreheels in reply to BoneyC

I know what you mean, my DC41 is terribly heavy. Quite how heavy I don't know as I only have kitchen scales but it must be somewhere around a 6 month old baby! The suction is too good as well which doesn’t help. In fact I stupidly left it running on a rug & it melted the pile. It was only a cheap one from Ikea but still! It's fine on tiles but once on the carpets boy do I struggle. I said in my reply to Tisboo below saying I'd had a workout when I needed to use it the other week.

John Lewis sell Gtech but Curry’s don't, just so you don't waste your time going.

I was in the same boat recently and two people who clean a lot more than me were raving about Shark hoovers - I was always a Dyson fan. I bought a corded Shark Lift-Away because I didn’t want to be faffing about charging it up after every use. After 8 months, the suction is still brilliant. It’s incredibly easy to use - the top part lifts away so you can do the stairs without struggling half way up with the entire hoover (which I used to have to do with my Dyson).

Sops profile image

How strange, ordered one that arrived yesterday, staring at me in the box waiting to be opened, it is from John Lewis, their own endorsement and weighs 2.2 kilos with a detachable hand held and 2 yr guarantee. Currently i have a Bosch cordless, i think it is called the Absolut but that is proving to be a bit heavy for my arthritis to cope with, have recently had the wrist trapeze bone removed as could not be improved medically so weight is important.

If you need a review I will be using new one later today. Had very good review which is why i bought it and free delivery helped as Iam not going out much. I have wooden, amtico, stone floors and carpet in my sitting room so should hopefully service all

But you’d need another hoover to do the stairs surely, unless they can climb stairs?

12Chrissy34 profile image
12Chrissy34 in reply to KittyJ

I can use our existing hoover on carpet without too much trouble, so if I got a roomba for downstairs that's most of the battle won

GTech are light and easy to use. I prefer mine to my old Dyson.

I have the Dyson animal v10 and although a good hoover I find it too heavy to use for long

nomoreheels profile image
nomoreheels in reply to Tisboo

I needed to use my old DC41 animal ball the other week & boy did I have a workout. Not a particularly warm day but did I sweat, sorry perspire. I also had neckache for a few days afterwards, it was only when I was complaining to my h about it that he reminded me it's because the Dyson is so heavy to manoeuvre & the suction too great.

Ozzy profile image

I have a Neto robot hover which I bought 3 years ago as a reconditioned one. He is linked to Alexa so I just ask him to clean whilst I read my book🙂 I have a Dyson cordless for stairs but I wish that you didn’t have to hold the trigger all the time

KittyJ in reply to Ozzy

That’s brilliant, I wouldn’t have thought to do that.

It's good advice to go to a shop so you can try out a few makes. You really need to have a go first....

I swear by Dysons, light and very easily manoeuvrable on hard floors and carpets, and good for stairs. But I second the advice re Dysons above: go for a Dyson 8 as the newer models get progressively heavier. There is a trigger to hold in though, but it's so well designed into the handle that your normal hand pressure switches it on. I've never had a problem with it.

Hi all have been watching this site since lock down found it much more informative than the people who are supposed to be in the know. This is my first post.

I have a robot vacuum absolutely fantastic turn it on and off it goes carpets, tiles wood floor all excellent. Was so impressed I even got another one for upstairs as I found on bad days it was too heavy for me to lift even though they are around 3kg in weight. I researched before buying and found they were the lightest ones. The models I have are eufy bought from amazon first one was about £250 second one same model £150 on amazon again but one of there deals that time.

Only down side they don't do the stairs!

but as soon as one comes on the market I will be getting one of those.

So even on bad days my floors are kept clear of little white dog hair. They come with a remote control as well.

GTech is the lightest vacuum cleaner on the market.

I've been able to use mine despite my wrist and arm issues.

They are not cheap but very good.

Thanks for the initial post. I want to get a new one too and have been wondering which to buy- we still have one of the old cylinder types which is very awkward to use. Thanks everyone for your advice.

So far, it looks like a gtech for when I'm mostly OK and for upstairs etc, and something robotic for the open plan downstairs for ease

Thank you everyone for your thoughts. You lot have just made me cry which is a difficult job! I have a dyson animal hoover and have been having more and more difficulty trying to hoover up because of handle weight and push. Hubby has been great but can’t understand why hoovering has become so hard and I have been upset feeling useless because I don’t have strength to do things so I read all the posts and find that I am not useless just strengthless ! So having cried in my tea I am off to buy a new hoover. Excuse-old dyson can be relegated upstairs and I will glide Greco below. You are great people. Imagine being positive about housework! That’s Covid for you x

I've belatedly realised that my sudden need to clean is tied to my anxiety - it's something that I could ostensibly have control over (the general cleanliness and tidiness of my environment) but I'm prevented by things out of my control (RA, inadequate equipment). Don't be ashamed about crying, sometimes it's the little things that nobble you. Have another cuppa and a sneaky biscuit

Post note, opened my new cleaner box and it is self assembly! Not:much use with dodgy hands .

Phoned JL who were, as ever great and immediately gave me a full refund, and are sending a carrier tomorrow to collect said machine. Not a good recommendation, and my apologies, will now read what people recommended to you !

Oh no! Gtech has been recommended a lot, but iirc the reviews on their site suggest an element of self assembly too. Do you have a kindly neighbour?

KittyJ profile image
KittyJ in reply to Sops

I think a lot of the rechargeable ones are a bit of self assembly otherwise the’d have to be in a really long box 😊 Mine have only needing clipping together which you have to do to change the heads if needed too.

Nope, its a party palace next door, 6 beds, pizza hut and clubhouse in garden together with gym, am watching hard for how many partygoers at next weeks extravaganza. Would, not have time for a self assembly job! Will stay with my bosch cordless i think, only problem with that is due to stress and meds i am losing a lot of my blonde locks and it needs unblocking when it has encountered my bedroom floor, mind you i think anything would.

Am having to strategically place bits to cover bald spots, dont ya just love it all! Sopsxx .
