Just wondering.... I have to have a surgery procedure next week and the specialist wants me to stop taking Plaquenil and the Methotrexate for 7 days before the procedure. Anyone else have to do anything like this? 🙂
I would check with the rheumatology team also. They may want to discuss this with the surgeon themselves?
The NICE guidance suggests that immunosuppressants should not be stopped, but I know that a lot of people on here have stopped their medication before surgery, so it looks as if opinion is divided. Stopping methotrexate for a week is not going to make much difference either way as it takes a long time for it to disappear from the body. People on immunosuppressants do sometimes take longer to heal after operations, so that might be why this advice is being given.
I took LEF and was told when my foot was operated on to continue with RA meds but stop the Riveroxaban and I injected Heperin or something like that. Isn't it a lottery what people are advised.
Yes, I had an operation last November and had to come of Mtx for two weeks before and two after. Then unfortunately, I got an infection of the skin and ended up having to stay off it for another three weeks.
I am waiting to have some toenails removed and have even been told to come off Mtx for two weeks before and after having that done. I had a toenail off about two years ago and wasn't told to come of Mtx and I got an infection in my toe, so it seems that coming off it is sensible. However, I didn't need to come off Plaquenil.
I hope all goes well for you Sylvia.

Yes I thought it was strange about the Plaquenil to. Thanks
Yes. I was on mtx and prednisolone when I had sugery last December. The doctor told me to come off mtx two weeks before my op but to continue the pred. I gave my anesthetist a list of meds I was on.
