Mtx injection

Hi all, I have been on mtx injection for about 5 weeks. It’s really helped with nausea but was wondering if it’s normal for it to sting?! I inject in my thigh (alternate leg), can’t remember if it stung when nurse first did it I was a bit nervous! Am I doing something wrong? Thanks 😊

Mine sometimes stings but not for long. I don't find that it stings when I do it either side of my belly button though (that's probably because there's too much fat there 😀).

No it doesn’t sting for long, just wanted to make sure that’s ok. Might try stomach if it keeps happening. Thanks 😊

If you do your stomach, make sure you leave 5 cm either side of your belly button. I've tried to copy the instructions from the Metoject site but for some very strange reason, it comes up with the front page of the site with a notice saying Page Not Found. This is in other languages too. Most odd.

Hi Kibeth, I alternate my mtx injections in my thigh because I alternate my Cimzia injections in my tummy. I have a diary, where I write down what day I do which injection and which side - otherwise I forget! When I use the alcohol wipe, I have found that if I leave it for a minute to dry off it is less stingy. Sometimes I bruise a tiny bit and sometimes I don't. You just sort of get used to it. I used to hesitate at the beginning but it all, very soon, becomes familiar.

Thanks will leave for a bit after the wipe because I do it straight after. Will see if that helps

I always keep a diary too for the MTX saying which side I have injected on and on which leg etc.

My injection also stings if I do it as soon immediately after using the wipe. Leave it for a few secs and you should be ok.

Have you tried using alternate sides of your stomach rather than your thigh? Pinch the skin and inject - I was shown that way and it's never stung... worth a try.

I was shown in the thigh but might try if it keeps stinging, thanks

Hi, I agree with the other posts - leave the alcohol wipe for a few seconds before injecting.

I’m currently suffering with nausea after my injection and up to 2 days afterwards 😖

Wondering if it’s the MTX and sulfazalazine combination

Will definitely leave after the wipe for a bit, my nausea used to last for days but now don't really have much at all just the odd bit the day after injection. I’m not on sulfazalazine so not sure about that combo 😕

Sulfa alongside Methotrexate made me really sick. I had to call me of and switch to a hydroxy Methotrexate mix. Still using anti nausea pills but at least I don’t vomit all the time, it’s back to nausea around injection day/after! M x

Do you use alcohol wipes? I found these made it sting more. I shower then inject no need for wipes no sting

My health nurse told me not to use the wipes its strange all the different advice we get. She said wash your hands and this would be all ok!

It is strange because the wipes are supplied in the Metoject box?

Hi, I have sulfasalazine as well. It takes a while to get used to that. I take 2 tablets in the morning and evening. They suggested that I increased it to 3, but I couldn't get used to that so kept it to two.

I started off injecting into my thigh for the first couple of years and then I too started getting a stinging sensation which lasted several weeks.

I have now been injecting into my stomach and so far no problems at all.

Worth a try and follow the guidelines such as pinching the skin etc.

Good luck.

You'll have gathered it's due to injecting too soon after using the alcohol wipe so you could try allowing the area to dry before injecting. I always inject straight after my morning shower so I don't need to use them. I was shown to inject into my tum not my thighs but did try my thighs which I found stung more, & bruised easier, so I went back to my tum. If you want to try just be sure you pinch the skin a couple of inches either side of your navel.

I had problems with the wipes, nurse said if you shower and then inject you don't need the wipes. I injected in thigh alternate ones, maybe having chunky thighs helps?

I didn't get any stinging for the first few months. I've always injected in my tum so I can't comment on the thigh. However, I quite often have stinging now but it doesn't last overly long. Just a little disconcerting at the time!
