Slightly OT - washing food.

i was telling my son I that I had started to wash everything that came into the house with washing up liquid. I never thought I’d see the day that I washed food with soap and water but yes, that day has arrived. I mentioned that I do mine in the kitchen sink and my son sent me this. Reminds me of when I was young my mother used to look after goldfish for neighbours, she used to put them all in the bath at the same time when she cleaned out their bowls I’ve got a feeling that no one ever got their original goldfish back but if it was every a problem I was too young to notice.

We have a conveyor system in the kitchen when unpacking the groceries - he takes them out of the bag and washes the outside. I dry and put away...

Items in carboard boxes are 'quarantined' for 24 hours. The few things in plastic are washed in soapy water.

Well - what else have we got to do? We might as well indulge our fantasies that we are in control of our environment in the house.

Mind you there were two and I'm being polite here unscrupulous/ out of their mind/ stupid young lads who since have been arrested, as I understand who went into a supermarket in Morcambe and deliberately began to lick their hands and then wipe them on food. The supermarket then had to close and remove/ dispose of the food. I don't live in their world and wished they didn't live in ours either. On a lighter note time to worry is when the bath is filled with your shopping, bubbles and candles around the side!

Whilst we still tell people like these they are “naughty” They or people like them will just continue .....so hit them where it hurts ....in the pocket .....fine them £1000-even if they pay it off at a £X a month it will wake them up to the seriousness of the condition our country is in!

The reason places like HK & Singapore are overcoming the situation better, is because in crisis situations....when their government tells them to do something ....they do it – here we smile - do nothing.....& we end up just how we are today.

I agree AC - they are beyond naughty, they have a serious problem. I think these people need to be made to suffer in some way so that the seriousness of what they have done and how it affects society hits home.

Totally agree AC, when I heard it on the TV, I could not comprehend what I was hearing. Yet if they or their family were to need the services of the NHS, no doubt they would be right there. I just don't get the mentality of some people and the lows they will stoop to just for a few seconds of 'attention' yet there are other youngsters out there doing good in their community or simply abiding the rules yet where is their recognition?

Can’t even begin to imagine what has gone wrong with society that we are producing young adults who would do such a thing. The money spent on their education has been totally wasted.

No discipline or responsibility......I have a young relative who is a school teacher and she tells me the five-year-olds tell her to Fxxx off.

The parents just smile when she tells them such language is unacceptable.

She finishes teaching soon....says she’s had enough of banging her head against a brick wall after 13 years!

What chance do children have in life if that is the parent’s attitude at five?

That's absolutely disgraceful, no wonder she's finishing teaching soon.

Apparently it’s not unusual....5 year olds are going to school unable to go to the loo by themselves, & a knife & fork are a mystery....their parents are out at work & don’t have time to teach them & eating with a spoon is easier! She teaches in an affluent area too.

Go figure!

That's incredible. What on earth are they going to grow up like!

Just like the oiks who are causing problems this weekend I expect.

Nobody wants to live in a police state ...but in today’s situation I don’t think the police should be criticised for the way they are handling these ignorant people...a few nights in a cold police station cell might snap them out if their childish behaviour....especially if Mummy & Daddy have to pay to bail them out.

Sadly, some people don't know how to be good parents. We need the Sure Start centres back in large numbers. I saw a couple on a tram (back in the days when I could go on them!) with a toddler in a pushchair. They were encouraging him to say, "Get your tits out." Why?

Tbh.....who knows,,..,Just rest assured that phrase will probably never gain him a worthwhile job....on the other hand...our taxes will probably end up keeping him.....as no doubt we did those parents.

in reply toAgedCrone

But it isn't his fault he has such terrible parents. They should suffer for it, but not the child. I hope he meets people who show him a better way to be as he gets older.

As I said before...when parents are told their child’s language is not acceptable by the teacher & they just smile......that says it all.

What to do ?

Expel the child? Fine the parents?

Not an option in this day & age.

Discipline is a much misunderstood word.....by people who don’t understand its benefits.

in reply toAgedCrone

It may be too late to do much for the parents, but I would hope someone can influence the child in due course to be better than his parents are currently making him.

Totally agree and I just don't understand why you would want to do this, it's beyond me.

Nearly had a disaster yesterday when I washed my current favourite M&S gluten free quiche (delicious!) and water ran right through the box. Husband looking on was aghast but I got it out quickly enough for it not to have been damaged - good job I didn’t submerge it like I did the rest of the shopping 😉

I'm loving spraying all my parcels and letters with my home made dilute bleach and water solution. It's becoming a new hobby. Just one capfull(15ml)any bleach to 500mls water in a old/repurposed spray bottle. spray and leave to dry. I generally leave them unopened for a day on top just bcz I'm a germaphobe.

Just leaving everything from a supermarket for three days in the garage, then there is no need to wash everything down.

Fruitandnutcase profile image
Fruitandnutcase in reply toMetal-legs

That’s ok for stuff that isn’t fresh or chilled, but some stuff needs to go in the fridge straight away.

You can put items in fridge, wash hands thoroughly then leave items for three days.
